    • A system and method is disclosed that provides a learning environment useful for teaching students about the structure, characteristics, and behavior of a complex system. The learning experience is centered around a quantitative model-based simulation, whose state is updated according to defined algorithms with each successive execution of the model. The learning environment provides the student with user-friendly means for reviewing state information and choosing actions and/or “instrument” values. Several design strategies are combined and implemented to manage the student's cognitive load and engender insights. The student may partially delegate control to automated agents, obtain qualitative descriptions of changes and of model entities, and access algorithmic details that explain causes and effects. The designer can vary simulation behaviors in different problem scenarios to achieve teaching objectives.

    • A speed sensor for sensing a rotating speed of a wheel is provided. The speed sensor includes a thermoplastic sensor body. A mounting ring is connected to the sensor body. The mounting ring can include a flange portion. A plastic insert is integrally molded into the sensor body adjacent the mounting ring. An active sensor element is located in a lower end of the plastic insert, a face of the active sensor element being vertically spaced a predetermined distance from the flange portion. A pair of terminals is electrically connected to the active sensor element. The pair of terminals extends from an upper end of the plastic insert. The flange portion, when pressed onto a hub associated with the wheel, is adapted to space the active sensor element an operating distance from a tone wheel mounted to the hub.

    • A portable electronic device carrier includes a charging system. The carrier is configured to at least partially house a portable electronic device such as a cell phone, PDA or the like. The carrier may comprise a pouch or have other configurations. The charging system comprises at least one photovoltaic cell configured to convert light into electricity, and at least one charging port configured to be engaged by a portable electronic device, the charging port configured to provide power to the portable electronic device when the portable electronic device is engaged therewith. The charging system may include at least one battery configured to be charged by the electricity generated by the at least one photovoltaic cell. The charging port may comprise contacts which are engaged by an interface of the portable electronic device. In accordance with the invention, a portable electronic device is charged using a portable charging system associated with a carrier for the device.
