摘要： A method and apparatus for distributing content data from a content provider to a subscriber. The method includes encrypting content data by the content provider and providing the content data from the content provider to a broadcaster. The content provider also provides a content descriptor, including keys to decrypt the encrypted content, to a conditional access provider (170). The broadcaster (130) distributes the encrypted content information (150) to a subscriber. A business service provider (160) negotiates with the subscriber to deliver individual content programs or packages of content programs to the subscriber for a fee. The conditional access provider distributes a content descriptor including keys necessary to decrypt the programs the subscriber selected from the business service provider. A CAM (122) retained by the subscriber maintains a log (114) of programs accessed, and uploads the log to the business service provider, which is used to determine the appropriate fee which the subscriber should be charged.

摘要： A content distribution system and method which prevents unauthorized access to secured content such as movies and music. The apparatus includes a source, a receiver, an authorized security device such as a conditional access module (CAM) for decrypting authorized content, an output device for outputting content and a backend for managing accounts and system operations. One aspect of this invention provides a mechanism for providing secured content on a medium such as a DVD optical disc. These devices may verify that there is authorization to play the secured content, add watermarks to the secured content, convert the secured content to a displayable form and provide a means for preventing output of the secured content.

The apparatus includes a set top box (100) which receives the information from a broadcast stream or recorded medium, or other source and a conditional access module. The set top box (100) is paired with the conditional access module (400) such that they have a shared secret key which is used to send communications to each other. A pirate attempting unauthorized access does not have the shared secret key and thus can not receive the communications. The apparatus and method further require that the set top box (100) and the conditional access module (400) follow one of a plurality of protocols in communicating with each other. A pirate attempting unauthorized access will not able to follow the protocols.

摘要： One type of DVD disc is called DVD ROM and intended for use in a DVD ROM drive which is part of a PC. The DVD disc suppliers are interested in encrypting DVD data in order to prohibit unauthorized use of the data. In a computer, the DVD ROM drive has the capability to copy data onto another storage media where it could be pirated. When encoding a disc, the error correction and/or error detection bits (ICP) are exchanged with normal data (MD) or data words are replaced by transformed data words. The reverse processing is carried out when replaying the disc. When this scrambled data is output from a standard DVD ROM drive, the data in the check byte area is lost and the information is not useable.

摘要： To enable the source of an unauthorized copy of an information-bearing medium, such as a video DVD, to be traced, a compressed digital signal stream to be stored on the medium is altered to include "running marks," that comprise pixel blocks changing in position frame by frame and encoded with information designating where and when the copy was made. The medium under test is played back synchronously with a reference medium containing the locations of the running marks together with original video. The source of copying message is advantageously encrypted and scrambled to avoid detection or alteration by a copyist. The message preferably is spread, for example into a spread spectrum carrier, to enhance discrimination among a large number of sources and enable demodulation in the presence of noise.
