    • A mobile radiotelephone injects an audible alignment signal which is a function of the orientation of the radiotelephone antenna, into the audible radiotelephone communications. The audible alignment signal prompts the radiotelephone user to reorient the radiotelephone antenna for improved alignment with the source of radiotelephone communications. The audible alignment signal is preferably a function of the received signal strength of the radiotelephone communications. The audible alignment signal is preferably artificial noise which is injected in the radiotelephone loudspeaker along with the radiotelephone communications signal, to thereby restore subjective graceful degradation behavior to the received radiotelephone communications. Artificial noise injection is preferably used with coded digital radiotelephone systems which do not audibly degrade until a threshold is reached, below which communications are suppressed. Artificial noise injection may also be used with variable power base stations.

    • Time slots of a plurality of time-division multiple access (TDMA) cellular radiotelephone base stations are synchronized. Cellular radiotelephone frequencies are allocated among the plurality of base stations according to a first frequency allocation system in a first synchronized time slot and according to a second frequency allocation system in a second synchronized time slot. Each frequency allocation system may include an adaptive channel allocation system, a frequency reuse system, a frequency reuse partitioning system or a fixed frequency reuse system. Spreading codes of a plurality of code-division multiple access (CDMA) cellular radiotelephone base stations are synchronized. Cellular radiotelephone frequencies are allocated among the plurality of base stations according to a first frequency allocation system for a first synchronized spreading code and according to a second frequency allocation system for a second synchronized spreading code. Each frequency allocation system may include an adaptive channel allocation system, a frequency reuse system, a frequency reuse partitioning system or a fixed frequency reuse system. Cellular radiotelephone systems and methods affording increased base station channel capacity, more efficient spectrum utilization and improved equipment migration are thus provided.

    • An echo canceling loudspeaker telephone includes a loudspeaker which produces a sound pressure wave in response to an input signal which is applied to an audio input thereof. This sound pressure wave includes a desired linear component which is a linear function of the input signal, and an undesired non-linear component which is a non-linear function of the input signal, and the sound pressure wave is transmitted along an acoustic path. A microphone is positioned in the acoustic path and converts the sound pressure wave into an output signal. An echo filter is responsive to the input signal and generates an estimated echo signal. This echo filter includes a loudspeaker model which generates an estimate of the sound pressure wave including an estimate of the linear component and an estimate of the non-linear component. This echo filter also includes an acoustic path model which generates an estimate of the acoustic path from the loudspeaker to the microphone. In addition, a subtractor subtracts the estimated echo signal from the output signal thereby reducing an echo portion of said sound signal.

    • An antenna arrangement, method, and cellular communications system for transmitting and receiving signals between a base station tower, ground-based mobile subscribers, and an aircraft. The antenna arrangement includes a vertically oriented array of antenna elements, and a feedline arrangement that feeds the antenna elements with progressively phase-retarded signals, thereby generating an elevated antenna beam directed upward toward the aircraft and away from the ground-based mobile subscribers. In one embodiment, the antenna arrangement also generates a horizontal antenna beam for communicating with the ground-based subscribers, The horizontal beam and the elevated beam are sufficiently separated in elevation to prevent mutual interference when using the same frequency spectrum.
