    • A constellation of satellites distributed around the earth serves as a communication network that supports global communication of subscriber units. Subscriber units may potentially transmit from any location on earth. Some locations such as radio astronomy sites may be interfered with by nearby transmissions from subscriber units. Subscriber units located within a potentially interfering proximity to radio astronomy sites are prohibited from transmitting potentially interfering signals by reception of a non-interfering beacon at radio astronomy sites. The beacon repeatedly transmits a synchronous control signal with a subscriber unit's servicing satellite's control signal. The beacon's control signal is compatible with a subscriber unit's communication receiver. Control signal information contained in a beacon control signal inhibits the subscriber unit from transmitting.

    • A frequency modulator for radio frequency (RF) signals is described that symmetrically modulates the RF signal with either binary signals or voice signals without distorting the amplitude of the binary signal near bit edges. The inventive frequency modulator includes a reference signal generator, a phase comparator for comparing the reference signal and a feedback signal to provide an error signal, a filter for filtering the error signal, a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) responsive to the filtered error signal for generating an output signal, a divider for dividing the VCO output signal by a predetermined number to provide the feedback signal, circuitry coupled to the VCO for modulating the VCO output signal with the binary signal, and circuitry coupled to the divider for varying the predetermined number of the divider between a first predetermined number and a second predetermined number in response to the binary signal. Since both the VCO and the divider are modulated by the binary signals, the filtered error signal applied to the VCO remains essentially constant, while the frequency of the VCO is symmetrically varied.

    • An improved frequency synthesizer for duplex radios is described that includes a phase-locked loop coupled to a reference oscillator for developing a transmit carrier signal. The phase-locked loop includes a phase comparator, loop filter and voltage controlled oscillator in a forward path for generating a transmit and receive injection signal. A first mixer mixes the injection signal and an offset signal from an offset oscillator to generate the transmit carrier signal. A divider divides the transmit carrier signal by the pre-selected number to generate a feedback signal which is also coupled to the phase comparator. A second mixer mixes the injection signal with a receive carrier signal to generate an intermediate frequency signal, which is coupled to a receiver and demodulated. A duplexer couples the transmit carrier signal to an antenna and also couples the receive carrier signal from the antenna. Two techniques are described for modulating the transmit carrier signal with information signals, such as voice, tone, or data signals. According to one technique, both the reference oscillator and the offset oscillator are modulated. Since the modulations are cancelled by the phase detector, the injection signal is not modulated. According to the other technique, only the offset oscillator is modulated. Modulation of the error signal is cancelled by combining it in a summer with the integrated information signal provided by an integrator. The second modulation technique may be utilized when it is desired to lock the phase-locked loop to an external reference signal or when the reference oscillator cannot be modulated.
