    • A film flattening apparatus and method of operation for a printer particularly operable in a film flattening mode for flattening image frames of filmstrip segments attached by a side attached tow web and transported through a transport path gap between the flattening apparatus and an aperture formed in a stationary film transport base. The flattening apparatus is formed of first and second clamping members suspended apart from the base in a retracted position during the web transport and moved toward the base to a contact position pressing against the longitudinal or lateral and the transverse edges of the filmstrip image frame in a film flattening mode. The first and second clamping members are formed with longitudinally and transversely extending clamping elements, respectively and are suspended apart from one another and the base in the retracted position and advance sequentially in a nested relation toward the base and the contact position in the film flattening mode. In the film transport mode, the longitudinally extending clamping elements guide against the filmstrip lateral edges and tend to flatten excessively, transversely curled filmstrip segments. The transversely extending clamping elements are positioned further apart in the transport mode and out of interference with the filmstrip segment leading ends transversely curled centrally toward the second clamping member. Preferably, the base has a thickness within which sculpted, arcuate reliefs are formed centered on the mid-point of the transverse opening edges of the aperture and provide upward guidance to filmstrip leading ends transversely curled centrally toward the aperture in the base.

    • A printing apparatus includes a media supply section and a media take-up section. Each section is capable of accepting a plurality of cassettes. On the supply section side, the cassettes can contain a roll of photosensitive material that is to be processed through a printing section. The cassettes on the take-up sections are initially empty and are designed to receive the web of photosensitive material after the web has been conveyed through the printing section. The cassettes can be provided at a plurality of locations and can be angularly positioned with respect to each other. A single transport assembly can be provided at each of the supply section and take-up section, and can be rotatable about a rotatable point so as to accept or discharge media to each of the appropriate cassettes. A splicer is provided on the transport assembly in the supply section, for splicing the end of the material from an empty cassette, and is also rotatable with the transport assembly. In a feature of the present invention, the material can undergo a vertical twist, which results from the pivoting of the paper path by way of the transport assembly.

    • A web flattening system for holding a filmstrip (web) or filmstrip and paper carrier combination (web) against the aperture of a linear array scanner. The foregoing is accomplished by providing: a platen having at least two orifices over which the bottom surface of a web moves; a plate that is positioned above the top surface of the web and the platen so that the bottom surface of the web will be positioned in close proximity to the orifices; and means for supplying a high velocity gas stream to the orifices so that a pressure differential will exist between the top and bottom surfaces of the web; whereby the pressure differential will push the bottom surface of the web towards the orifices and a thin layer of gas will form between the bottom surface of the web and the platen.
