An armoured shield for protecting the torso of a seated wearer against small arms fire comprises a lower section 12 which rests on the seat, a mid section 11 curved around the abdomen and sides and an upper section 14 inclined outwardly at an angle of between 5 and 45 degrees to the mid section 11. A flange 16, between one and two inches in width, projects outwardly from the upper edge of section 14 at an angle of between 15 and 60 degrees. Suggested materials for the shield are manganese alloy steel, titanium alloys and resin-impregnated glass fabric laminates. The shield has an outer covering of lightly woven nylon fabric and an energy-absorbing lining 22 of such material as foamed polyurethane or rubber or nylon felt. Straps 17, 18 on the shield may be secured to further straps (19), (20), Fig. 4 not shown, mounted on the seat frame.

[Also in Division A5] A hand grenade containing gas-dispersing material has a rubber casing 30 and a fuze 26 to ignite a charge 32 housed therein. Charge 32 may be black powder or other low explosive. On ignition, charge 32 disrupts the casing 30 and ejects containers 10 embedded in the charge. Each container 10 comprises a cylinder of aluminium or steel closed at each end and housing an axially bored charge 12. The bore 15 communicates with a port 14 in one end wall and in its other end is a delay mixture of silicon and red lead, which is ignited by the charge 32. When the delay burns through, it ignites the charge 12 and the residue of the delay blocks the bore at the end holding the delay, so that gases from the charge 12 issue through port 14. In a modification, the port 14 is replaced by a port (21) adjacent the delay and inclined to the bore 15, the issuing gases being deflected by a baffle (20) to force the container to travel along a curved path. The charge 12 comprises a mixture of a lachrymatory agent and combustible materials. In an example 40% o-chloro benzal malononitrile is mixed with 27% potassium chlorate, 18% sugar, 12% magnesium carbonate and 3% cellulose nitrate, the proportions being by weight. The mixture was compressed by a ram at a pressure of 1200 p.s.i.
