    • 130,582. Collins, C. S., and Roessel, L. July 30, 1918, [Convention date]. Mixing fluids in flow.-Relates to the regulation of the proportions of mixtures of fluids, and consists of a method and means for controlling the rate of flow in apparatus which maintains various proportions of the fluids, which may be gases or liquids or both. The pipe 10 conducts one fluid, the pipe 11 another to the pipe 100 connected to a receiver. A valve 15 determines the pressure in the part 10 , which communicates with one side of a diaphragm or piston valve 18 of a compensator 16 by a pipe 17, the other side communicating with the pipe 11 by a pipe 19. If the pressure in the pipe 10 is the greater, the diaphragm 18 moves a piston-rod 21 of a valve 22 to open ports 23 to permit more fluid to pass to the pipe 11 , until a definite relationship, depended upon the primary pressure in the pipe 10 , is established. The rates of flow through pipes 10 , 11 are established by orifices 28, 29, the pressures at the outlet sides of which are equal, being the pressure of the receiver. The relative ratio of flow are thus governed by the valve 15. Additional supply pipes such as 12 may also be provided, similarly controlled and connected, and is shown with a heating or refrigerating section 39 in the circuit, the connexion 40 to the diaphragm controller 32 being beyond this. To vary the rates of flow for this, the orifices 28, 29, 35 may be adjustable and may then comprise a casing 70, Fig. 2, containing an orificed bushing 71 controlled by a cone-shaped member 76 hung on brackets 7, 74 in a head 72, and adjustable by rack teeth thereon engaging the pinion end 78 of a shaft 79 disposed in the head 72, and provided with a key 81 in a cap 82 screwed in the head 72 and bearing on a packing-ring 83 in a pocket 84. The Specification also describes apparatus whereby, after the pressures are compensated, several supplies can be taken off the pipes at various points through controller mechanism which replaces adjustable orifices, and provides for control of flow in one pipe from the flow in the other. Specification 27703/10 is referred to.

    • 459,650. Transporting railway wagons by road. SHELTON, T. C., No. 1 Flat, Cedars Way, Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire. June 15, 1936, No. 16612. [Class 78 (iv)] A loaded railway wagon is transported from one rail-head to another or from rail-head to any delivery point on a motor lorry comprising tractor and trailer portions with provision for moving the trailer portion in vertical and horizontal planes relatively to the tractor portion. The loaded wagon rests on rails 19 which extend above the inclined pit 15. The lorry comprises the tractor and trailer portions 1, 6 fitted with alternative sets of wheels for road and rail. The trailer portion 6 is backed down the incline so that the smaller wheels 10 run on the rails 16, while the larger road wheels 9 run on the floor of the pit and also form guiding flanges for the wheels 10. When right under the truck, the buffers are coupled to the hook 14. On drawing the trailer up the incline again, the chassis 6 gradually rises and engages under the axles 22 of the truck to support the latter during its road transport. The chassis 6 is preferably arched downwardly as shown to avoid contact with the brake-mechanism of the wagon.
