    • 6309. Dilg, C. F., and Dilg, C. H. J. March 26. Knives, cleaning and polishing.-The knives &c. to be cleaned &c. are supported on a rest 21 attached to a vertical stem which bears on the horizontal lever 15. The pivot of the lever can be raised and lowered by a screw 18 and nut 17. The lever bears on the ends of the bell-crank levers 12 pivoted at 14 and forked at 13 to engage with the spindles 5 of the polishing-rolls 28. The descent of the rests 21 thus advances the rolls towards one another. The rolls have rubber rims 6 held in place by plates 29, which bear on the block 30 and are fixed by screws 31. Leather 32 covers one side of the blocks 6 and springs 10 tend to press the rolls apart. The axles of the rolls are preferably inclined as shown, but they may lie in the same straight line. The rolls may be actuated by a crank handle 33 on a spindle 7 geared to the spindles 5 by skew bevels 8, 9. The extent to which the rests 21 may descend is determined by an L-shaped plate 23, which is slid vertically by a cam 24 with a handle 26. The adjustment of the cam is to allow for knives &c. of different thickness, and the adjustment of the pivot regulates the degree to which the rolls may be pressed together by depressing the rest 21. The piece 23 carries a pin 27 bearing on the lever 20 pivoted at 33 and arranged to carry spur gearing 42, 43 and the buff, brush, or grinding wheel 44 opposite a similar wheel 40 driven by spur gearing from the spindle 7 when the clutch 80 is operated.

    • 150,910. Dilg, C. H. J. Oct. 14, 1919. Rollers or cylinders.-In a roll for a polishing- maohine, the rubber or other polishing-ring is held between the outer annular portions of two interchangeable clamping-rings that have inner annular portions provided with similar interlocking parts. The clamping-plates 14, 15, which may be mounted direct on a shaft 12 or on a hub 11 secured thereon, have offset outer annular portions, adapted to hold the polishing-ring 16, and inner annular portions provided with equally spaced lugs or pins 15 and intermediate holes 14 , the pins or lugs being adapted to engage the holes detachably to lock the plates together. The pins may be made long enough to project through the corresponding holes and to engage in holes in flanges 11 , 13 formed on the shaft or on the hub whereby the plates are driven, and the plates are secured in position by means of washers 17, having holes engaging the projecting pins of the plates adjacent to the flanges and nuts 18. In order to prevent creeping of the polishing-ring, the outer annular portions of the plates have ribs 14a, 15 ; or ribs 14b, 15b or screws passing through threaded openings may be employed in place of, or in addition to, the ribs 14a, 15a. When more than two rolls are to be mounted on one shaft, intermediate spacing sleeves are provided having flanges thereon with holes engaged by the locking-pins. The clamping-plates may be stamped from sheet metal, the locking-lugs being struck out from the metal. To ensure that the edges of the seating for the ring shall come together, the locking portions of the plates may be dished outwards; this feature, as incorporated in cast-metal clamping-rings, is shown in Fig. 8, in which additional pins and holes 14 , 15 are also shown. Radiating teeth or striations may be employed for interlocking in place of the pins and holes.
