    • 12,844. Torrence, C. A. Sept. 8. Reciprocating sieves; pneumatic separating.- Grain fed into a hopper 11 is discharged into a curved shoot 16, the discharge being regulated by an automatically-operated valve 42 the outer edge of which overlaps the overhanging lower edge of one of the bottom plates of the hopper, whence it passes into a valve box 33 communicating on opposite sides with a scalper shoe 34 for the pure grain and a shoot 35 for the impurities. A fan B driven from a hand-wheel forces a current of air into a. conduit 18 provided with adjusting-plates 25, a valve 30 controlled by an adjustable weight regulating the discharge. The supply of air to the fan is controlled by sliding doors at the ends of the fan casing, and an even distribution of the air is provided for by rings 24 mounted on the fan vanes 19. The valve box 33 is provided with a valve plate 37 which can be adjusted angularly and is mounted on a pivot which can be fitted in a series of orifices 39 in the end of the valve box, according to the nature of the grain being treated. The inclination of the scalper shoe 34 may be varied by adjusting the support 50 carrying its outer end. The inner end of the shoe, which is connected to the shoot 35 by a strip of linoleum or the like, is oscillated through connexions with a crank on the shaft 20, a similar device being used to operate the valve 42.
