    • A pressure-fit barrier such as a gate has a first panel member coupled to a partially overlapping second panel member so that the panels are slidable laterally relative to each other, thus changing the overall width of the gate. A carriage member is slidably mounted on the second panel for lateral movement relative to the second panel and a displacing mechanism is coupled with the carriage member and the second panel and is selectively operable to laterally displace the carriage relative to the second panel. An engagement mechanism is connected to the carriage for selectively engaging with and non-engaging with the first panel. When the engaging mechanism is non-engaged lateral movement of the carriage member with respect to the second panel does not cause relative lateral movement between the first panel and the second panel, and when the engaging mechanism is engaged lateral movement of the carriage member causes corresponding relative lateral movement between the first panel and the second panel. The expansion mechanism may include an over-center linkage.

    • A belt driven infusion pump for emptying the contents of a syringe is disclosed. The pump includes a syringe pusher including an antisiphon catch and a pressure detector which is used for detecting occlusions or the end of infusion. A syringe clamp for locking a syringe in place is also provided. The syringe clamp is spring loaded and lockable. A syringe position detector is provided to ensure the proper placement of the syringe prior to and during pumping. A control knob is provided on the face of the pump for controlling both the locking of the syringe barrel clamp and the coupling of the drive belt with a d.c. motor. The pump includes a housing having an elongated slot through which the syringe pusher is connected to the drive belt. A sealing band is connected to the syringe pusher and is moveable with the syringe pusher for sealing the slot against moisture or other contaminants. A pole clamp assembly is incorporated within the pump housing and includes a clamping arm for securing the pole between the clamping arm and the housing. The clamping arm is movable to a storage position where it is substantially flush with the outer surface of the pump housing.

    • A security gate includes an installation and release mechanism that is operable with one hand. The gate comprises two panels which are extendible with respect to each other and lockable in the extended position. This makes it possible for the gate to expand across a wide variety of door openings. A handle located centrally on the top of the gate is connected by a pair of cranks and a pull rod to a pair of plungers which contact one side of the door frame. Spring bias on the plungers normally force the plungers into contact with the door frame. Slots in the upper and lower plunger links permit the plungers to accommodate irregular door frames. The handle is employed to withdraw the plungers from contact with the door frames and, conversely, the absence of handle pressure causes the gate to position itself solidly against the vertical door jamb. The handle is also employed by the operator to carry and position the gate in the doorway, allowing one-handed operation. A thumb operable handle interlock system prevents the handle from being accidentally manipulated unless one of two release interlock buttons is depressed by the thumb of the user. Also, the two extended panels are held in position by a second safety interlock which prevents a pair of extension adjustment knobs from rotating unless the extension interlock is released.

    • A low power coin discriminator detects and identifies the denomination of a coin to activate a parking meter, telephone, or vending machine device. Initially the device is in a low power, dormant state. Insertion of a coin into the discrimator trips a switch which produces a wake-up pulse which turns on a microprocessor. The coin falls upon a piezoelectric element, a signal from which causes the microprocessor to activate a photoelectric sensor. The coin moves through the photoelectric sensor which determines the net cross-sectional area of the coin. The microprocessor samples the output of the photoelectric sensor to detect the minimum light incident upon the sensor at the point of maximum eclipse of the light beam. The microprocessor also samples the output of an integrator which integrates the output of the piezoelectric element to produce a numerical value proportional to the mass of the coin. If the output of the photoelectric sensor indicates that the coin is within acceptable limits then the measured mass of the coin is also compared to the corresponding limits. If the coin is deemed to be valid, its denomination is recorded in a conventional manner. Once the discrimination process is complete the circuit automatically returns to its original low power, domant state.
