    • Various beverage packages for containing the two components of mixed drinks, such as whisky and soda, are described. The main container may be a can (Figures 1 to 4) or a bottle (Figures 5 to 11). The reservoir defining a first drinks chamber (9) is tubular. The reservoir may have a push-fit connection (Figures 1 and 2) with a formation (7) on the top wall (6) of a can and an abutment (14) (Figure 1) with the bottom wall, or a push-fit connection (Figure 2) with the bottom wall (4). When the container has a neck (24) the reservoir is captive to the neck, either as a push-fit in the neck (Figure 5) or by a connection with the cap (Figures 7 to 11) such that when the cap is removed the reservoir can be withdrawn from the neck and a releasable closure (31) can be released to enable the drink in the first chamber (9) to be poured out.

    • Drinks cans are provided with a gas reservoir containing a gas to bubble into beer to initiate the production of further bubbles from gas dissolved in the beer, when the can top (4) is opened by pulling the ring-pull device (5). In the construction of Figure 1, a plastics cap (8) is a tight snap fit on an annular rib (9) formed on the can base (3), the cap (8) being provided with a fine hole (10) through which nitrogen bubbles on opening of the can. In the construction of Figures 2 and 3, an unapertured blow-off cap (8) is fitted on an annular rib (15) formed on a partition wall (12) of the can, the cap normally covering fine holes (13) in the partition wall, air under super-atmospheric pressure in gas reservoir (13) bubbling into beer in the main chamber (6) when the cap blows off the rib (15) on opening of the can top.

Figures 1 and 2 show cans in which plunger (8) has a fluted wedge-shaped portion (12) which jams in the partition wall to define a series of passages between the flutes when the initially convex-outwards base (7) is popped to the concave-outward position (7'). Figure 2 shows a modified form of poppable base (7). Figure 3 shows a piercing plunger provided with an axial passage (16) and transverse port (17) to provide a passage between the two chambers (6, 13) of the can when the plunger has been pushed through the partition (5). Figures 4 and 5 show plungers which permanently penetrate the partition wall and are relieved (at 18, 20) to define a passage connecting the can chambers on axial displacement of the plunger from a sealing condition.

    • When dispensing carbonated beverages, particularly beers and especially draught stout, it is desirable to obtain a close-knit creamy head. To achieve this a container (1) includes a separate closed hollow insert (5) containing substantially no oxidising gas and means (6) responsive to opening of the container (1) to provide communication between the inside of the insert (5) and beverage (7) contained in the body of the container (1) upon opening it to jet gas from the insert (5) into the beverage (7). The means (6) preferably has the form of a pressure responsive valve. The insert (5) may be arranged so that its internal pressure is increased after the container (1) is sealed or the means (6) may have a different relief pressure when initially inserted into the container (1) from that upon opening the container (1).
