    • A method and apparatus for the infusion of a drug into a patient involving: (i) Calculating a multiplicity of infusion rate profiles for a selected drug by monitoring drug efflux from the body of a group of patients for a corresponding multiplicity of target concentrations of the selected drug; (ii) determining the body size of the patient, such as their Lean Body Mass; (iii) selecting a target concentration of the drug to in turn cause selection from the multiplicity of infusion rate profiles an infusion rate profile substantially corresponding to the infusion rate profile for the selected target concentration; (iv) scaling the selected infusion rate profile by the determined body size or Lean Body Mass of the patient, and (v) administering the drug to the patient in accordance with the scaled profile by means of an infusion device which is controlled to deliver said drug at said scaled infusion rate profile. By using the method and system defined above, drugs which are non-linear in their effect on a patient are able to be delivered to the patient in a much more accurate manner thereby avoiding overdosing, and indeed underdosing, of the drug and the undesirable consequences thereof.

    • A syringe pump having a drive head (1) mounted on a lead screw (2) which drives the drive head (1) to cause the plunger (P) of the syringe (S) to be advanced to deliver the contents of the syringe in a controlled manner. The drive head (1) supports a sensing module (3) having a cylindrical outer metallic body supporting a sensor disk (9) to which a sensing button (10) is attached. The disk (9) has a central insulating disk (15) supporting copper plates (16 and 17) and thin layers of dielectric (18, 19) separated from ground plates (20, 21) by an air gap (22) defining separate electrical capacitors each having a significantly different value of capacitance such that a large fall in capacitance occurs in the first capacitor while a large rise in capacitance occurs in the second capacitor. The capacitors are connected to an integrated circuit (23) which detects changes in capacitance caused by small forces applied to the button (10) to provide signals representative of contact with the button (10) and/or the force applied by the button (10) and the plunger (P). The drive head (1) also carries spring loaded pawls (26, 27) which engage behind the flange of the plunger (P) of the syringe (S) to prevent plunger movement caused by siphoning or other undesired movement of the plunger.

    • A drug infusion pump having a drive system including a drive motor (49), a worm gear (53) on the output shaft of said motor, a worm wheel (55) meshing with said worm gear (53) and constructed to drive an output reduction gear (60) and clutch means (62) associated with said output gear (60) for disengaging drive to a drive head (61) engaged by a drive belt (83) which is permanently connected to a syringe actuator (7) to cause controlled infusion of the contents of a syringe under the control of a central control system including a microprocessor (20) and programmable memory means (21 and 23) which determine the manner in which the infusion is performed. A syringe clamping arm (5) is associated with a potentiometer (24) which provides to the controller diameter information regarding the syringe. The programmable memory means (23) includes data relating to one or more standard syringe sizes to enable automatic operation on insertion of a standard syringe. In the event that a non-standard syringe is to be used, the infusion pump may be simply programmed to allow such non-standard syringes to be used.
