    • A method is described for grinding a composite workpiece (18) to form a component having concentric (31) and eccentric cylindrical regions (30). The method comprises mounting the workpiece (18) in a computer controlled grinding machine (10) having a grinding wheel (12) the advance and withdrawal of which is controllable by a programme entered into the controlling computer (32), loading a wheelfeed controlling programme into the computer, relatively positioning the grinding wheel and the workpiece to align the wheel with a first selected region of the workpiece, advancing the grinding wheel towards the selected region so as to grind the surface thereof, controlling the wheelfeed so as to maintain grinding contact between the grinding wheel and the workpiece so as either to grind a concentric cylindrical region thereon or an eccentric (offset) cylindrical region thereon as required, information about each selected region of the workpiece being stored in the computer and addressed as appropriate so that the wheelfeed can be cotrolled appropriately depending on whether a selected workpiece region is to be ground as a concentric or an eccentric (offset) cylindrical region. The method allows a workpiece having both concentric and eccentric (offset) cylindrical regions thereon to be ground using a single grinding machine under computer control without demounting the workpiece from the machine. The method also envisages introducing small advance and retract movements in the wheelfeed whilst the grinding wheel is engaged in grinding a concentric cylindrical workpiece region so as to introduce into the ground region an eccentricity which is equal and opposite to any eccentricity which grinding process forces introduce into the ground region, so that the two eccentricities cancel out. A computer controlled grinding machine is described as are programmes for controlling the machine.

    • A method is described for grinding a cylindrical surface bounded at one or both ends with a radial flange or side wall which also has to be ground to size, which comprises the steps of selecting the angle of wheel advance so that the side-wall grind will be completed ahead of the cylindrical grind. After the side-wall grind has been completed the wheel is stood off from the side-wall, so that only the external cylindrical circumferential surface (the face) of the wheel will make grinding engagement at least at the start of the final part of the grind. Thereafter the grind is completed by plunge grinding to the cylindrical surface to achieve the final diameter required of the cylindrical surface. The stand-off is created by stopping and reversing relative axial movement of wheel and workpiece. The subsequent trajectory of the wheel may be normal to the cylindrical surface or during its final movement to complete the grind, the wheel is advanced angled path similar to that employed during the previous part of the grind, the stand-off being such as to prevent contact with the side-wall during the wheel movement after the stand-off, and thereby preventing further metal removal from the side-wall during the final angled approach of the grinding wheel. During the final part of the plunge the workspeed and/or the coolant flow rate is reduced from the speed at which it is rotated during the previous part of the plunge prior to the stand-off to assist in achieving a desired grind quality. The method is applicable to grinding an internal combustion engine crankshaft, especially the cylindrical and side wall regions for a main bearing of the crankshaft and/or the side wall regions of a crankpin.

    • A method is described for setting up a computer controlled grinding machine for cylindrically grinding concentric workpiece regions, in which a programme containing data about the workpiece and a programme containing wheelfeed instructions are loaded and the wheelfeed instructions programme is run so as to grind at least one such workpiece regions to final form. The region is gauged and the magnitude and angular position of any unwanted eccentricity introduced by the grinding process, is noted, and the whellfeed programme isntructions or control derived therefrom signals are adjusted so that during subsequent grinding of the said region (or a similar region of a similar workpiece), the wheelfeed is controlled so as to compensate for said measured unwanted eccentricity. The workpiece region is stress relieved before the gauging. After setting up, the grinding machine will eccentrically grind a workpiece region which is to have a cylindrical surface concentric relative to the workpiece primary axis, rather than concentrically grinding the said region, the degree of eccentricity being such that when the cylindrically ground workpiece is stress relieved after grinding, the region will be concentric relative to the workpiece axis. A computer controlled grinding machine is described as are programmes for setting up and grinding.
