    • 936,871. Electro-machining metals. CLEVELAND TWIST DRILL CO. June 3, 1960, No. 19782/60. Class 41. Bodies of cemented metal carbides are electro-machined using as electrolyte an aqueous solution containing free hydroxy] ions and a dissolving agent for the cementing material and consisting of a saturated polybasic organic acid, an ammonium halide, or an organic amine. In examples, the following compounds are added to an alkali hydroxide solution, sodium oxalate, citrate, tartrate, or gluconate; tri-ethanolamine, tetrasodium ethylene diamine tetraacetate, ethylene diamine, ammonium chloride, bromide or iodide, and combinations of these. Tungsten carbide cemented with cobalt and silver soldered to steel, and similar metal bodies may be shaped, and sharpened to form tools by applying the electrolyte in an apparatus as described in Specification 854,541. Where silver solder is present, e.g. in a workpiece of a cemented carbide, steel and silver solder, the electrolyte preferably includes a cyanide or an amine, which will then also dissolve other impurities present, e.g. tungsten and cobalt oxides, and compounds of Ag, Cu, Zn, Cd, Fe, and nickel. A range of electrolyte compositions are described for cemented metal carbides, and may include other alkali metal salts e.g. Na 2 CO 3 , NaCl, and KF.

    • 984,614. Extruding; making twist drills. CLEVELAND TWIST DRILL CO. Jan. 16, 1964 [Jan. 21, 1963], No. 1969/64. Headings B3A and B3P. An extrusion die 5, particularly for forming twist drills, has a generally cylindrical bore 5a, with a smoothly contoured entrance 15 and at least one helical land 13 having along one side an axial relief 20. For forming twist drills from heated billets 10 of cast high speed tool steel, the die has two opposite lands 13, 14, Fig. 3 (not shown) whose entrance edges are relieved at 16-19, Fig. 3 (not shown). Die 5 is preferably made of molybdenum-tungsten high speed steel or sintered metal carbides and is mounted in a die holder 4 located in a housing 3 which also receives the billet container 6 whose conical end 9 is engaged by a cap 7. Extrusion pressure is applied by a ram 12 acting through a dummy block 11 of friable material such as compressed carbon, molybdenum disulphide or glass which ensures complete extrusion.
