    • One embodiment of the present invention relates to an apparatus and method for encoding/decoding video through a vector quantization-based secondary prediction, which performs a secondary prediction on the basis of a vector quantization to reduce prediction errors. The present invention also relates to a recording medium. The method of the present invention comprises: generating a primary prediction error signal on the basis of an input signal and a prediction signal; performing an adaptive discrete cosine transform (DCT) process on the primary prediction error signal, and performing a primary quantization process on the transformed signal; determining, for each block, whether or not a secondary prediction is required, on the basis of the distorted value of the signal obtained by performing an inverse quantization process on the primarily quantized signal and performing an adaptive inverse discrete cosine transform process on the inverse quantized signal, and on the basis of a preset reference value; performing a vector quantization process on the primary prediction error signal corresponding to one or more relevant blocks which require the secondary prediction, in order to obtain a center value; generating a secondary prediction error signal for said relevant blocks on the basis of the primary prediction signal and the center value; performing an adaptive discrete cosine transform (DCT) process on the secondary prediction error signal, and performing a secondary quantization process on the transformed signal; and encoding the primarily quantized signal or the secondarily quantized signal.

    • The present invention relates to an adaptive filter generating device, method and recording medium for motion estimation/compensation, which improve video data compression performance and give superior restored image quality for a given bit rate.The adaptive filter generating method for motion estimation/compensation according to one aspect of the present invention comprises: an optimum filter generation step involving the determination of filter factors for minimising error during current block pixel estimation, and involving the generation of optimum filters in block units based on the number of bits required to encode minimum error and previous-pixel motion vectors when using the filter factors; a representative filter generating step involving the concentration of the generated optimum filters based on the positioning of optimum filter factors which produced filter factor spaces, within the spaces, and involving the generation of representative filters for each of the concentrated filter factor spaces; and a representative filter number selecting step involving the selection of the total number of bits produced in specific encoding units and the number of the representative filters based on encoding error found in decoded images corresponding thereto.
