[Class 45] A removable stanchion, particularly for forming part of a barrier at a pavement edge, comprises a metal tube A within the lower end of which is welded a rod a having a collar a against which the end of the tube abuts. The rod is bored to receive a cross-piece forming projecting studs a which engage, in bayonet-joint fashion, within grooves b, b in a socket B set in the ground or concrete. The socket may have local thickening in the neighbourhood of the grooves. When stanchions are to be connected by chains or bars, the connections with the stanchions are in such positions that the stanchions are prevented from turning to an unlocked position. In a modification, the grooves may consist of two vertical grooves b , Fig. 10, angularly displaced and coupled by a circumferential groove b . The collar on the stanchion may be positively secured to the socket, when in locked position, by screws having heads requiring the use of a specially shaped spanner. The socket may have a lower flange b , Fig. 6, connected by webs b to the body of the socket to provide a non-rotatable hold for the socket when in the ground &c.

    • 410,475. Treating land, roads, &c. with flame and heat. STEELWAY, Ltd., and GOODYEAR, C. W., Queensgate Works, Monmore Green, Wolverhampton. Nov. 15, 1932, No. 32262. [Class 6 (i).] Apparatus for destroying weeds on roads, yards, &c., for heating old asphalt, and for drying or for melting ice round manhole covers and tramway points &c., comprises a fuel burner and a fuel reservoir mounted on a twowheeled truck provided with a rigid handle, the arrangement being such that the burner is relatively near the ground and by manipulation of the handle may be directed to cause the flame to impinge on the ground from any desired direction and at any angle, within limits, to the plane of the ground. The frame A of the truck comprises a longitudinal strip a and a cross strip a forming an axle for two wheels B. It is provided with a supporting foot M. The handle C is pivoted at b and secured by a clamping screw b2. The reservoir E is secured by bolts D and provided with an air pump H, filler cap J, and shut-off cock K. The fuel pipe G leading from the reservoir to the burner F may be flexible to allow of adjustment of the burner about a clamping screw c . The burner F comprises a heating tube f, a jet nozzle g, and a shield h formed as a spreader to produce a fan-shaped flame. There may be two or more burners of blow-lamp type. According to the Provisional Specification the reservoir, or a pump therefor, may be mounted on the handle shaft, and the burners are adjustably mounted on an adjustable cross-bar on a pillar extending upwards from the centre of the axle. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 27220/96, [Class 6], and 1704/12, [Class 107].

    • 451,367. Cycle stands. STEELWAY, Ltd., and GOODYEAR, C. W., Queensgate Works, Monmore Green, Wolverhampton. March 14, 1935, No. 7911. [Class 136 (i)] A foldable rack or stand for supporting a number of bicycles comprises a main rectangular frame a, a , a provided with pairs of members a3 for receiving the front wheels, and adapted to be supported in an inclined position on the ground by rear struts B, which are transversely connected at points intermediate of their height by a bar D provided with upwardlyextending members e (e.g. in pairs) joined at their upper ends to the main frame. The ends of the bar D are pivoted to the struts B, and the upper parts of the members e are outwardly cranked for pivotal attachment to the outsides of the members a , a . The upper ends of the struts B are pivoted to the side members a by means of open-ended slots engaging studs provided with wing-nuts c, so that the struts may be detached and folded (after other wing-nuts d have been loosened) against the members e, when the members B, D, e may be folded against the back of the main frame a, a , a . Alternate pairs of members a are provided with transverse connecting-bars a , so that the front wheels of alternate bicycles are raised to afford clearance for the handle-bars.
