    • Certain embodiments consistent with the present invention involve a method of selectively encrypting digital video content that involves receiving a plurality of packets containing the digital video content; identifying packets containing start of frame (SOF) headers; inserting padding into the packets containing SOF headers to move the content of the packets containing the SOF headers to a previous or subsequent packet and create padded packets containing the SOF headers; selecting certain of the packets for encryption according to a selection criterion, wherein the selected packets exclude the padded packets containing SOF headers; encrypting the selected packets; and retaining the padded packets containing the SOF headers unencrypted to form selectively encrypted digital video content. Corresponding decoding method as well as encoding and decoding apparatus are also taught.     • A CableCARD device for manipulation of a stream of data has an inband data input for receiving a stream of data from a host, the stream of data having a plurality of packets each having a packet identifier (PID) associated therewith, wherein the stream of data further has encrypted packets. A PID remapper selects certain of the packets for remapping of the packet identifiers associated with the selected packets, and remaps the packet identifiers of the selected packets so that the packets are associated with a new packet identifier. A decrypter decrypts the encrypted packets. An encrypter re-encrypts the decrypted packets. An inband data output sends the data stream with remapped packet identifiers back to the host.     • An encryption arrangement for television programs or other digital programming consistent with certain embodiments sends content completely in­ the-clear and also encrypts only a portion of the content required for full presentation of a television program. The arrangement allows interoperability between new TVs that can handle encryption and older TVs that cannot. Regulations prevent new TVs from receiving only the clear content. New TVs are made to descramble the encrypted portions of the content. Older legacy TVs can receive all the content in the clear. The encrypted portions are chosen so that dramatically less bandwidth is required as compared to full dual carriage of the content. Licensing provisions relating to the encryption technology can be used to control unauthorized use of content.     • A multiple-mode processing circuit, such as a dual-mode processor (5), operates in at least first and second modes according to a switch (10). When a mode is active, data transfer between the processor and a respective memory occurs. Thus, instructions from the memory can be executed at the processor, and the results can be stored in the respective memory. For example, first and second memories (14, 54) may be provided for the first and second modes (10, 50), respectively. The memories are separate, and no data transfer can occur between the memories directly or via the processor. The first mode (10) may be a secure mode for secure processing operations, such as providing conditional access for television programming services at a set-top subscriber terminal. The second mode (50) may be a non-secure mode, such as for providing any other application at the terminal, e.g., program guide, shop at home service, etc. In one embodiment, a data bus is provided for time-multiplexed transfer of data between the processor and the respective memories. In another embodiment, switching of individual internal registers and external elements such as address and data latches, is provided.
