Combination tools; spanners and wrenches.-Nut and pipe wrenches, which may or may not be combined with a screwdriver, can be opened to any position and then locked by a set-screw 15 bedding on the bottom of an inclined longitudinal groove 12 in the shank 2. As shown in Fig. 1, the shank 2 has an opening 3, across a part of which a web 8 extends and parallel sides 4 which act as guides upon which the movable head 5 slides. This head has a face 10 for nuts and an inclined serrated face 11 for pipes. In use, the head 5 is set against the side of the nut, and the screw 15 turned until it engages the inclined bottom surface 13 of the longitudinal groove 12. By sufficiently withdrawing the screw 15, the head 5 can be withdrawn into the opening 3 and removed by passing the slot 6 over a narrowed portion 7 which is extended to form a screwdriver 14. Fig. 5 shows a modification, in which the movable head 5 is pivoted to a part 16 which slides on the shank 2 and is locked in any position as before by a screw 15 in the groove 12. A spring 25, secured to the shank 22 of the movable jaw and entering a notch 26 in the part 18, keeps the surface 20 yieldingly moved over toward the surface 21.

摘要： 6758. Bryar, G. March 20, A.D. 1903, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Locking nuts.-The face of the nut consists of two inclined surfaces terminating in vertical shoulders. The nut is screwed down in a flexible split locking-washer provided with corresponding inclined surfaces and'shoulders, as shown in Fig. 4. The sharp projection F prevents the washer from rotating backwards after it has been screwed down. The nut is prevented from slacking back by the wedging action of the inclined surfaces.
