    • 3333. Bryant, R. Feb. 10. Range-finders; telemeters.-To determine the distance of an object, the angles at the measured base of a triangle, having the object for its vertex, are measured by means of telescopes, with additional side object glasses, placed at the extremities of the base. Each telescope is supported by collars carried in Y-shaped frames mounted on a stage, which is provided with levelling-screws, a clamp and tangent for fine adjustment, and worm gearing L, M for rotating the telescope in its frame. A side object glass F, preferably at right-angles to the object glass E, is provided with a reflector G adjusted so as to reflect the object to the point of intersection of the line of collimation of the glass E with a diaphragm H. This diaphragm is adjusted by a micrometer screw and carries a pointer for indicating its position on a series of points or a scale attached to the frame. A Ramsden eyepiece K is fitted for viewing the object and the scale. The two telescopes being pointed towards the object and placed so that each side object glass is seen by the other-instrument, the distance between the telescopes is measured and the diaphragms are adjusted until each pointer coincides with the image of the distant object. From the distances between the centres of the diaphragms and the images, as given by the micrometer, the angles at the base of the triangle are determined. According to the Provisional Specification, the side object glass of the second telescope is directed in a line at a known angle with the base line, or towards an object at a known distance from the first telescope. In modifications, prisms may be used instead of reflectors, and the diaphragm may be fixed, the prism or reflector being moved by a micrometer. One telescope only may be used, when a point on the other stand is sighted by the side object glass, after which the telescope is transferred to the second stand.
