    • 922,174. Cooling beds. BRIGHTSIDE FOUNDRY & ENGINEERING CO. Ltd., and F. STARKEY. Aug. 18, 1959 [Aug. 19, 1958], No. 26696/58. Class 83 (4). In a cooling bed for a rolling mill having sets of racks 10 and 11, the individual racks of one set being located alternatively with those of the other set, the front ends of the two sets of racks are supported on carrier brackets movable in circular paths by eccentrics which are 180 degrees out of phase and the rear ends of the sets of racks are supported on the free ends of rocker arms which are pivotally connected to the carrier brackets and mounted for limited pivotal and horizontal movement intermediate their ends so that each rack describes a circular movement in the vertical plane. Hot bars received from the mill by rollers 40 are transferred to orificed ramps 41 by a rotating kicker 43 where they slide down to a stop 42 before being raised into the first notch of racks 10 by plungers 44. The racks 10 are supported by beams 12 and 22, the beam 12 being mounted on brackets 14 rotated by eccentrics 15 on a drive shaft 16. The racks 11 are similarly supported by means 13 and 21. The beam 13 being mounted in brackets 19 driven by eccentrics 20. Rocker arms 23, 24 freely supported on a pedestal 29 are pivoted to the brackets 14, 19 so that the vertical component movement of the eccentrics 15, 20 is transmitted to the beams 21, 22. In operation the beams 22 therefore rises and falls with the beam 12 while the beams 13, 21 also rise and fall together, the eccentrics 15, 20 being 180 degrees out of phase. The horizontal component of the eccentric motion is transmitted to beams moving laterally on rollers 25, 26. Batteries of such cooling racks may be joined by spigot and socket engagement at the ends of beams 12, 13, 21, 22 which maintain alignment while minimizing distortion due to expansion. An expansion coupling is also provided in the drive between the several crank-shaft in a battery-type bed. The bars are received from the racks on to a tiltable platform 45 and then pass on to rollers 46 which carry them away.

    • 421,419. Coating moulds with sand &c. BRIGHTSIDE FOUNDRY & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., Don Road, Sheffield, and COLLIER, E. W., Marks Tey Lodge, Coggleshall Road, Marks Tey, near Colchester. June 20, 1933, No. 17585. [Class 87 (ii)] In apparatus for lining moulds with sand, dust, or similar material, a sand container 2 is rotated to-and-fro to cause a mould 20, placed in the container in an inverted position, to assume an upright position in the sand on the forward rotation and to assume an inverted position near the mouth 3 of the container on the return movement. The container has trunnions journalled in bearings on standards 6 and is rotated to-and-fro from a driven shaft 14 by a pinion 7, toothed quadrant 8, rod 12 and eccentric 13. A shelf 15 is pivoted at 16 and supported on stops 17 in the upright position and an inverted mould is placed on the shelf. The container is rotated clockwise to the position shown in dotted lines. The mould is thus moved along the top of the container and, being now in an upright position, is filled with sand, the shelf 15 falling against the wall of the container to prevent sand escaping therefrom. On the return movement, the mould, in an inverted position due to rotation of the container, moves along slides 19 and the sand falls out of the mould but leaves a deposit therein, and the mould comes to rest in an inverted position in a well 18 adjacent the mouth 3.
