Springs.-A pneumatic spring especially applic. able to carts, wagons, automobiles, and railway and other vehicles consists of a differential piston 12 working in oil or other fluid in the cylinder 10, which communicates with the air vessel 11. When the piston is pressed down, the oil is displaced through the cock 25, valve 36, and the widened upper part of the passage 24 to the upper side of the piston, the excess due to the differential areas passing through the passage 40 into the vessel 11 and compressing the air in it. Thus the oil has two passages to the upper side of the piston, which descends rapidly. When the vehicle rights itself, the oil above the piston can only descend through the cock 25, so that a slow rise of the piston follows without jolt. Auxiliary springs 16, 17 are fitted to take up the shock in case of violent oscillation of the vehicle. Under normal conditions, the piston is at the upper end of the cylinder, and the amount of cateract action is adjusted by the cock 25, the square shank 30 of which, Fig. 4, may be locked by the gripping-ring 31, which is screwed at 32 to the casing. The vehicle body is secured to the plate 18, which is suspended from the lugs 20 of the piston by short links 21, as shown in Fig. 5.
