A portion of the collected liquid in trough 13 may be recirculated back to the associated contact unit 8 for further passage therethrough via a pipe 22 having an inlet end 24, outlet end 23 and a valve 25 to control the amount of liquid recirculated. A series of movable partitions 21 connected to a spindle 26 at the periphery of the units 8 and rotatable therewith are arranged to extend into the annular troughs 13 to impart movement to the liquid collecting therein. As shown the shaft 7 is disposed vertically within the casing, and liquid, before being distributed to the last contact unit 8, may be cooled in an external heat exchanger 27. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 3-6 not shown), the shaft (29) is mounted horizontally and the bottom of the annular collection trough (35) communicates with an external chamber (40) located above the casing axis through an inlet opening (44) in its upper part, said chamber having an outlet opening (45) in its lower part communicating with the inlet end (46) of an overflow pipe (37) disposed in the space between adjacent contact units, the outlet end (47) of the overflow pipe is provided with two discharge pipes (48, 49) extending from opposite sides thereof, whereby part of the collected liquid may be recirculated to the same contact unit and part may be supplied to the next unit on the shaft.
