摘要： An electrochemical fuel cell stack with an improved compression assembly comprises a tension member which is electrically non-conductive and preferably non-metallic. The tension member can be made from a composite material which has similar expansion and contraction properties as the stack materials, thereby reducing un desirable fluctuations in the compressive force applied to the stack. An improved apparat us for securing the improved tension member to the rest of the compression assembly is also provided. Preferred embodiments of an improved compression assembly employ a co llet and wedges to grip the tension member and compress a resilient member which impa rts a tensile force to the tension member and a compressive force to the fuel cell ass emblies. In other embodiments, an improved compression assembly employs a unitary resilient member and fastener in combination with a tension member. The improved apparatus is easier to assemble in high speed manufacturing processes because the compression assembly can be assembled or installed using the same machinery which is used to compress the stack in one fixturing because the compression assembly is assemble d by being stacked in essentially the same direction as the other fuel cell component s. An improved method of assembling a compression assembly for an electrochemical fuel cell stack is also provided.

摘要： Reactant gas supply streams for solid polymer fuel cells may be heated and humidified using heat generated by the fuel cell and water vapor from the fuel c ell exhaust. The heat and water vapor in the oxidant exhaust stream are sufficient t o heat and humidify a reactant gas supply stream, preferably the oxidant supply stream. The heating and humidifying can be accomplished by flowing a reactant gas supply stream and a fuel cell exhaust gas stream on opposite sides of a water permeable membrane in a com bined heat and humidity exchange apparatus. The method and apparatus are particularly suitable for use with air-cooled fuel cell systems and systems which employ near ambient pressure air as the oxidant gas supply.

摘要： A gas generator includes a reactant capable of producing a gas and a gas outlet valve that can function as both a gas flow valve and a pressure relief vent, using the same gas flow path through the valve. When the valve is closed and the pressure within the gas generator is below a threshold pressure, a moveable valve member is biased against a valve seat to block the outlet port. When gas generator is coupled to the apparatus, an actuator is inserted into the valve, displacing the moveable valve member and separating it from the valve seat to open the valve. When the gas generator is uncoupled, pressure at or above a threshold displaces the moveable member, separating it from the valve seat to open the outlet port so pressure can be released to the external environment.

The base layer has an opening formed therein. A top layer (18) of fluid impermeable sheet material superposed over a portion of the base layer extends across and beyond the base layer opening on the major surface of the base layer facing away from the manifold. An intermediate layer (17) of fluid permeable material is interposed between the base layer and the top layer. The intermediate layer extends across the opening in the base layer and laterally beyond the top layer. The intermediate and top layer have an opening formed therein for the passage of a fluid stream therethrough, said openings are circumscribed by the base layer opening.
