    • 323,866. Webb, H. A. Nov. 19, 1928. Producers.-A gas producer utilizing fine coal slack or dust comprises a rotary chamber a having pockets c which at their lower positions become charged with coal and at their upper positions allow the coal to fall freely in a scattered condition across the furnace interior. The pockets are formed in blocks b lining the rotary chamber and are shaped to lie in part behind the surface of the blocks. The coal is supplied through a rotary regulating valve c at the end of the furnace through which the flames and products of combustion pass and ashes fall into the ash-pit at j. A fixed coal or gas fired furnace g may be provided for starting and maintaining the gasification in the rotary furnace, and a fixed combustion and dust-collecting chamber h may be situated at the outlet, end, supplementary air being admitted at f. Preheated air may be supplied to the furnace. The pockets c are inclined so that the fuel is fed along the furnace, or the furnace may rotate, on an inclined axis or be of conical shape. The fuel may be gasified by partial combustion in the rotary chamber, combustion being completed in the combustion chamber h or the place where the heat is utilized.

Fish, dressing. - The fish are carried, bellies downward, in carriers E, mounted on an endless conveyer, and are split through the backs by an oscillating knife S, which does not, however, cut through the bellies. Each carrier E comprises a fixed portion a and movable side and bottom portions a, b, which are normally opened by springs e. The portions a , a, b are shaped to receive a fish, which is gripped, when the carrier is beneath the knife, by the pressure of spring- pressed rollers W on the portion a. In consequence of the one-sided adjustment of the carriers, the fish are split alongside the backbones, the cutting of which is thus avoided. The carriers are spaced, and the conveyer speed is adjusted, so that a complete cutting-stroke occurs whilst the carrier is below the knife and the return stroke is completed whilst the next carrier is being positioned. The arm T carrying the rotary knife S is pivoted to a bracket J, which carries the crank-operated rod U which oscillates the arm T. The knife mechanism is operated by sprocket-wheels and chains. A non-rotary knife may be used.

    • 249,838. Parsons, A. W. March 27, 1925, [Convention date]. Teaching bomb-dropping.-A system of targets to enable mimic bombing attacks on moving targets to be carried out, comprises a number of fixed targets in spacedrelation and means for causing the targets to appear in succession to give the impression of a moving target. As shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1, a number of targets 6 arranged in rows 1200 feet apart are controlled from a central station 7 having means for recording the time at which any target is operated. The targets may be electrically ignited flares 13, Fig. 2, or umbrella-like devices 9, Fig. 3, adapted to be opened and shut by a reversible electric motor 32. Both types of target may be combined with flares 14, 46 for producing smoke screens. A dummy bomb 50, Fig. 6, adapted to be dropped by the aircraft is provided with a watch 52 which stops on impact and is previously set in accordance with the clock mechanism at the central station. In use, the targets are made to appear in any desired sequence to give the impression of a target moving along a definite path at a predetermined speed. After the practice, the number of hits can be ascertained from the records at the central station and the positions of and times recorded by the dropped bombs.
