    • A dust abatement device including an intake or collecting means for delivering air to a rotating fan constituting a propulsion means, and outlet means directing air from the fan in a curtain at an area of dust concentration to inhibit dust movement out of the area. The intake means includes a duct extending from the fan to the area of dust concentration to pick up and deliver air-borne dry dust particulate from such area to the fan, the fan mixing the dry dust particulate with liquid sprayed on the fan to provide a slurry, and the outlet means directing the air and slurry from the fan to the area of dust concentration so that the slurry further wets the dust particulate at such area. The dust abatement device can be mounted on a machine that includes a mechanism for acting on material in a manner so as to create the area of dust concentration. More particularly, the dust-forming mechanism can be the cutter head of a continuous mining machine that rotates in a direction to cause an air flow rearwardly and upwardly from the area of dust concentration. In this event, the fan delivers the air and slurry in a spray to the cutter head and substantially in a direction counter to the air flow created by the cutter head to retard such flow and movement of the dry dust particulate away from the area of dust concentration.

    • The replaceable striking plate, which has a leading impact face, extends between opposite rotor rings of a disintegrating mill, and provides the basis of an impact system. The leading impact face extends rearwardly from its inner edge toward its outer edge at an angle with respect to a radius substantially within the range of fifteen (15) degrees to thirty (30) degrees for the major portion of its radial height, and extends relatively forwardly to its outer edge for a minor portion of its radial height. The major impact face portion has sufficient radial height so that a slug of particles striking the face will all impact on that face without some particles over-shooting the top and thereby missing impact. A clean face surface is provided for the impact of each succeeding "slug or ribbon sheet" of particles as they strike the face. A portion of the new slug does not impact onto a bed of old particles still remaining on the impact face from a previous slug. The radial height of the plate rearwardly from the impact face between the inner and outer edges is sufficient to maintain substantially the same angle and height of the major impact face portion during use and wear. The minor impact fact portion has sufficient radial height to accommodate a wash area at the juncture of the major and minor face portion as wear occurs. Integral flanges provided at each end of the plate and extending forwardly of the leading impact face, are provided with outwardly converging, flow-directing side surfaces adjacent the leading impact face and extending from the inner to the outer edge. The attachment of the striking plate between the rotor rings compresses the striking plate endwise for increased material strength.

    • In an auger mining system which forms an opening in the earth comprising a pair of axially aligned cylindrical holes and wherein the opening has a bottom, the system has a pair of side-by-side conveyors. Each auger conveyor has a shaft and a flight around the shaft which shafts are journaled through bearings at each end to a spacing member and where the spacing members are rigidly tied to each other by a longitudinal member having an underside. A supporting apparatus including a skid is attached to the auger pair and extending to the bottom of the opening. The skid may be attached either to the underside of the longitudinal member or to each of the bearings. If the skids are attached to the bearings, then skids which are on adjacent bearings of mating auger pairs are arcuately staggered to permit side-by-side positioning of the skids.

    • A pair of side-by-side augers, each having a shaft, a mateable rotational coupling on each end of the shaft, and flights along the shaft, are unitized by journaling bearings on each end of the shaft with spacers pivotally attached between each of the bearings on the same end of the shaft in order to align the axis of the shafts substantially parallel with each other. A longitudinal support member is rigidly secured between the spacers and between each of the flightings. A communications channel is provided in such a unitized auger assembly by mounting a channel along the top of the longitudinal support member. Apparatus is provided for inserting and removing the cable from the channel.
