[Class 132(ii)] [Also in Group XIX] A games-score indicator arranged for subtraction comprises a units wheel 1 having holes 10 exposed through a graduated slot 11 for engagement by an operating stylus. The spaces between the holes 10 are equal excepting for the space corresponding to the position of a transfer tooth 7, this space being larger so that the movement during the step 0-9 is greater than that during the' other steps. This greater step allows the transfer tooth 7 to operate and then move clear of an intermediate wheel 6 geared to the tens wheel 2, this latter wheel being normally free for independent operation by a stylus engaged with depressions 8. The depressions 8 are beneath a cover aperture 2 having a projection 12 extending only partly across the depressions 8, so that scores of over one hundred can be registered in one operation.

[Class 135.] A combined gas governor and safety cut-off valve actuated by a diaphragm or liquid sealed bell has the cut-off valve so arranged that it is held closed by the pressure of the gas when the gas supply is resumed. The pressure regulating valve 7 is directly connected to the actuating member 5 and the cut-off valve member 14 is connected through a bell-crank lever 12. The lever 12 is pivoted to a bracket 13 which forms a guide for the valve 14 and engages at its ends with grooved collars 10, 15 on the valve spindles. The collar 10 is adjustably secured to the spindle 6 and may be adjusted, after removing a plug 19, by inserting a tool in a saw-cut in the end of the collar. The valve is reopened by manipulating a knob 17 after removing a cover 18.

[Also in Group XXXVIII] A device for measuring the rate of fluid flow comprises means for causing a magnet assembly to rotate relative to an oscillatable armature which oscillates between contacts and thereby successively charges and discharges a condenser to give a measure of the rate of flow. The device may be used for measuring the flow of liquid or gas in a pipe, but is particularly suitable as a towed or attached ship's log, or, when anchored, for measuring water currents. For this purpose the device (Fig. 5) comprises a streamlined plastic watertight housing 25 containing a shaft 26 on which is mounted another housing 27 fitted with vanes 34 for rotation by the water currents. One or more magnets 30 are mounted equidistantly in the housing 27, and as the latter rotates, the magnets pass in front of a further magnet 35 in the fixed housing 25. This magnet is pivoted on a bar 36 and is caused to oscillate from side to side as the other magnets pass it. The other end of the magnet 35 engages alternately a contact 45 and a similar contact on the other side, and thus successively charges and discharges a condenser for measuring the rate of operation of the contacts (see Group XXXVIII). In a modification (Fig. 1, not shown), the magnets 30 are placed radially and the oscillating magnet is adjacent to them so that it moves towards and away from the axis of the rotor. When towed by a ship a suitable paravane attachment coaxial with the cable ensures that the device is submerged to a predetermined depth. For use with a pipe line the oscillating armature is preferably located outside the pipe. The apparatus can be adapted to calculate the distance travelled by a ship, and hence its position.

The points 1 are connected by screwed rods 11 and adjustable saddles 8 to a frame 6 supported by bell-crank levers 4 in a box 2 let into the track. Depressible plates 3 rest by means of knifeedges 3 on the bell cranks 4, and, when either plate is depressed, by lowering a roller 23 from the bottom of the car, the frame 6 is moved and the point operated by the rods 11. The bell cranks 4 are forked, as shown in Fig. 5, and supported in bearings 5 in the walls of the road-box 2. The upper faces of the frame 6 are serrated, and the saddles 8 are similarly serrated, and fixed in position by bolts 9 ; or they may be otherwise suitably connected. The rods 11 are fixed to the saddles by nuts 12 and coned nuts 13, or in any other suitable manner. A passage-way is formed for the parts of the rods 11 outside the box 2 by means of rectangular hollow blocks 16, the upper surfaces of which are roughened to form the road surface. The roller 23 for depressing the plate 3 is carried by a double lever 18 pivoted at 19 beneath the car and depressed by a foot-plate 25 fixed on a rod 24 and held in its raised position bv a spring 26 enclosed in telescopic tubes 28, 29. The points may be arranged to be returned to the normal position by springs, in which case only one depressible plate 3 and roller 23 will be required.
