    • A composition is composed of a hydrophobically modified polyacetal-polyether (HM-PAPE) or comb hydrophobically modified polyacetal-polyether (comb HM-PAPE) and a viscosity suppressing agent of cyclodextrins or derivatives thereof. A method for improving the pumpability and pourability of aqueous solutions of HM-PAPE or comb HM-PAPE is provided by admixing a cyclodextrin with the HM-PAPE or comb HM-PAPE to form a complex of the cyclodextrin and HM-PAPE or comb HM-PAPE where the viscosity of the HM-PAPE or comb HM-PAPE is suppressed and adding the complexed admixture to an aqueous system containing a water-insoluble polymer wherein the cyclodextrin is decomplexed and the HM-PAPE or comb HM-PAPE becomes an effective thickener. An example of the uses for this composition and method is in film forming coatings such as latex paints.

    • Cellulose ethers are disclosed which have sufficient nonionic substitution to render them water soluble and which are further modified with a C.sub.10 to C.sub.24 long chain alkylaryl group in an amount between 0.2% by weight and the amount which makes them less than 1% by weight soluble in water. Hydroxyethylcellulose is a preferred water soluble cellulose ether for modification according to the invention. These products exhibit substantially improved viscosifying effects compared to their unmodified cellulose ether counterparts, and provide good leveling and sag resistance in latex paints. Preferred alkylaryl groups are nonylphenyl, dodecylphenyl, and dinonylphenyl. Included are cellulose ethers with spacer groups of various lengths between the alkylaryl group and the connecting group to the cellulose molecule.

    • The present invention relates to a process for tailoring theology of an aqueous or water-borne coating composition using a system comprising an amount of a first hydrophobically modified polymer comprising a polymer backbone modified with a first hydrophobe and an amount of a second hydrophobically modified polymer comprising the first hydrophobically modified polymer further modified with a second hydrophobe. By incorporating a system comprising at least two hydrophobically modified polymers into water-borne coatings where the amount of all of the hydrophobically modified polymers are able to be independently adjusted, the resultant coatings may be tailored to attain a desired combination of Stormer or Brookfield viscosity and ICI viscosity.

These ethoxylated raw cotton linters derivatives are suitable for applications in oil-well servicing fluids, particularly to enhance functional properties of completion and workover fluids used during oil-well drilling operations.

    • Associative thickeners of the present invention are water soluble polymer compositions that have a backbone of poly(acetal- or ketal-polyether) with ends that are capped with hydrophobic groups. They are prepared by copolymerizing an alpha, omega-diol, -di,thiol or-diamino polyether with a gem-dihalide compound in the presence of a base to form an alpha, omega-diol, -dithiol or -diamino poly(acetal- or ketal-polyether) which in turn is reacted with hydrophobic reagents to form the final product. These associative thickeners are used in film forming coating compositions, such as latex paints.
