    • This invention relates to an improved self-energizing anti-creep parking and emergency brake mechanism for use with a disc brake assembly. The disc brake assembly includes a first pair of brake shoes disposed on opposite sides of a brake rotor. A service brake mechanism is carried by a caliper and is adapted to be actuated to selectively move the first pair of brake shoes from a non-braking position, wherein the first pair of brake shoes are disengaged from the brake rotor, to a service braking position, wherein the first pair of brake shoes frictionally engage the brake rotor. The disc brake assembly further includes a second pair of brake shoes disposed on opposite sides of the brake rotor. A parking and emergency brake mechanism is carried by the anchor plate and is adapted to be actuated to selectively move the second pair of brake shoes from a non-braking position, wherein the second pair of brake shoes are disengaged from the brake rotor, to a parking and emergency braking position, wherein the second pair of brake shoes frictionally engage the brake rotor. The parking and emergency brake mechanism exerts a predetermined force against the second pair of brake shoes urging them into frictional engagement with the brake rotor when the parking and emergency brake mechanism is applied and there is no relative rotation between the second pair of brake shoes and the brake rotor. The parking and emergency brake mechanism further includes a cam mechanism which exerts an additional force against the second pair of brake shoes urging them into frictional engagement with the brake rotor when the parking and emergency brake is applied and there is relative rotation between the brake rotor and the second pair of brake shoes.

    • An improved drum brake assembly wherein the operating condition of the brake shoes and the automatic brake adjusting mechanism can be determined without removing any component from the associated vehicle includes a backing plate, a brake drum, and first and second brake shoes supported on the backing plate and movable into frictional engagement with the brake drum.     • An internal shoe drum brake having a pair of hydraulically actuated brake shoes and an automatic brake adjusting mechanism. The brake adjusting mechanism includes a variable length strut disposed between the two brake shoes and actuated to increase in length by use of of a notched wheel which is rotated through engagement with a lever pivotally connected to one of the brake shoes and biased to rotate the wheel by use of a compression spring. The action of the one lever is controlled by a second lever also pivotally connected to the brake shoe and engageable by the strut and the one lever so that pivotal movement of the second lever permits a pivotal movement of the one lever of approximately three times the movement of the second lever away from the strut as great of the first lever.

    • A combined hydraulically operated service and mechanically operated parking brake of the disk type. The components are arranged to provide an extremely compact assembly that may be fit into existing vehicles. The mechanical actuator includes a roller type cam mechanism with an externally actuated operating lever. The mechanism is constructed to provide a minimum number of seals and a lip type seal is embodied that will provide a ready indication on test if the seals of the hydraulic portion of the brake are defective. An improved automatic adjustor interconnects the mechanical actuator with the piston of the hydraulic brake to adjust for wear of the brake linings. The automatic adjustor includes a differential screw mechanism and one-way brake that operates to effect automatic adjustment in the event of overtravel during brake application.

    • An improve structure for a caliper adapted for use in a vehicle disc brake assembly is preferably formed from aluminum and includes an inboard leg portion and an outboard leg portion interconnected by an intermediate bridge portion. The intermediate bridge portion defines a pair of opposed lateral sides. A recess is provided in each of the lateral sides of the intermediate bridge portion of the caliper.
