Latex, coagulating; plastic compositions con. taining india-rubber &c.-An oxide or sulphide of one of the metals lead, antimony, magnesium, or zinc or mixtures of these and sulphur are added to latex, and the mixture is coagulated by stirring or agitation alone, and the coagulum is removed from the serum and made directly into tiles, mats, floor coverings, boot soles, leather substitutes, &c. Cement or other usual fillers, and colouring matter may be added to the latex before coagulation. The particular oxide, sulphide or mixture employed is determined by the colour, specific gravity &c. required. Suitable proportions are 3¢ oz. of lead oxide, and 1 oz. of sulphur to one gallon of latex containing 3¢ lbs. of rubber. The fillers are mixed with water into a paste before adding them to the latex. After removal from the serum, the coagulum is passed through a mixing machine, sheeted, and dried. Before drying, the sheets may be treated with a solution of silicate of soda, to reduce inflammability and remove stickiness. Freshly cut edges adhere to one another, but in the case of heavily loaded compositions, a smear of petrol &c. may be necessary.
