    • A digitally encoded video fingerprinting system for generating and comparing/matching finger-prints from digitally encoded video which has been encoded according to an encoding method which involves the generation of residual macroblocks of pixels and the generation of quantized transform coefficients of the residual macroblocks, or of portions of the residual macroblocks, comprises a fingerprint database (5) and a video processing subsystem (10). The video processing subsystem (10) includes a fingerprint sequence selection module (14, 24) which is operable to select one or more sets of frames from input video content to be processed in order to generate a fingerprint; a fingerprint calculation module (14, 26) which is operable to generate a fingerprint based on a set of frames selected by the fingerprint sequence selection module; and a fingerprint comparator module (14, 28) which is operable to compare two fingerprints and to output a similarity score of the compared fingerprints. The method used by the fingerprint selection and fingerprint calculation modules includes selecting a group of frames of the encoded video content; processing the digitally encoded video content to obtain a set of quantized transform coefficients of residual macroblocks or portions of residual macroblocks associated with each of the selected frames; identifying a set of residual macroblocks per frame whose transform coefficients satisfy a threshold criterion; and generating a digital video fingerprint for the encoded video content in dependence upon the identified macroblocks or some property thereof within each of the selected frames.

    • A codebook excited speech coder analyzes speech to produce coefficients of a synthesis filter, the parameters of a long-term prediction filter (LTP) and a codeword indication one of a set of excitations. The results are transmitted to a receiver where they can be used to resynthesize the speech. The LTP and excitation analysis involve generation of impulse response products by adding additional terms to products already formed and storing them in a store. Multiplication of these products by excitation terms is performed using a pointer table storing precalculated addresses of locations in the store. If some excitations are shifted versions of others, some addresses can be obtained by modifying other addresses. The LTP analysis may include selection between a simple delay prediction and a prediction including the sum of two differently delayed terms, to provide improved predictor delay resolution.

    • In order to detect interlace errors in a video signal, one receives successive digitally coded frames, each frame comprising data for a field of a first type and data for a field of a second type (i.e. a top field and bottom field or vice versa). One then generates for each field of the first type:—a first difference signal (D1 F1) representative of the difference between the field and the second-type field of the previous frame;—a second difference signal (D1 F2) representative of the difference between the field and the second-type field of the same frame; and—a third difference signal (D1 F3) representative of the difference between the field and the second-type field of the following frame. Then, in dependence of the values of said difference signals, a decision signal (wOFlag) is generated indicating an estimated temporal relationship of the field to the second-type field of the same frame. This can be compared with a signal (IDFO) indicating a purported temporal relationship, and an alarm signal (wEFlag) generated in the event of a mismatch.
