[Also in Division B5] A combined heel and shank assembly 2, 3 is moulded in a single piece from a hard, elastic plastics material e.g. polypropylene or a polyamide. In a first embodiment (Fig. 7) the heel-shank assembly 2, 3 is secured by a screw 14 to an insole 11, the insole being positioned by projections 13 on the heel seat engaging apertures in the insole. The lasted upper is then transferred to a metal last 15 and is positioned over a mould 17, 18, 19 where the shoe is provided with a sole 20 and heel cover 19 e.g. of rubber or p.v.c. which is injected into the mould through a duct 21. The shoe is completed by the addition of a leather top lift. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2) the heel-shank assembly 2, 3 is placed in an injection moulding machine where a complete shoe, including upper, insole, sole and heel cover, is moulded on to the assembly. In order to provide a key with the injected material the upper surface of the assembly is provided with alternately arranged apertures 4 and projections 5 and the rear surface of the heel is provided with ribs 6.

    • A thin vulcanizable and hardenable rubberresin sheet is formed by mixing with rollers at 40-50 DEG C. rubber and a melamineformaldehyde condensation product, sulphur and a filler then being added and worked in a roller mill at 120 DEG C. with the rollers close together, the vulcanizing accelerator being added as near the end of the treatment as possible and the sheet being withdrawn in a semi-polymerized condition for calendering to the desired thickness at 40-50 DEG C. The sheet may comprise by weight 2.5 parts melamine-formaldehyde condensation product, 1 part natural or artificial rubber, 6.3 parts filler such as kaolin or wood meal, 0.05 part sulphur and 0.1 part accelerator, or the amounts of rubber and resin may be interchanged and 0.2 part zinc oxide added. Other condensation resins, e.g. phenol-formaldehyde, cresol-formaldehyde or urea-formaldehyde resins may be used as the resin component.ALSO:A thin vulcanizable and hardenable rubber-resin sheet is formed by mixing on rollers at 40 DEG -50 DEG C. rubber and a melanine-formaldehyde condensation product, sulphur and a filler then being added and worked on a roller mill 120 DEG C. with the rollers close together, the vulcanizing accelerator being added as near to the end of the treatment as possible and the sheet being withdrawn in a semi-polymerized condition for calendering to the desired thickness at 40 DEG -50 DEG C.
