    • A turbine wheel and bucket assembly comprising a wheel having a peripheral rim machined to include a dovetail shape about the circumference of the rim, interrupted only by a bucket installation slot; and a plurality of buckets installed on the wheel, each bucket having a dovetail portion and blade portion, with the dovetail portion machined to include a complimentary dovetail shape enabling each bucket to be slidably received on the wheel dovetail shape; each bucket having an integral cover at a radial tip of the blade portion, each cover having axially extending surfaces on either side of angled contact surfaces adapted to engage mating contact surfaces of adjacent covers such that the buckets are pretwisted in a first direction. The dovetail shape includes a keyway and a complimentary key is provided on the rim of the wheel, the key receivable within the keyway to prevent rotation of the dovetail portion of the bucket relative to the wheel.

    • A balance weight has first and second margins at right angles to one another with the second margin larger than the first margin. A balance weight groove in a rotor has outer and inner wall portions, with the outer wall portions spaced a distance less than the spacing between the inner wall portions. The balance weight has a central threaded opening receiving a screw and a driving slot in the upper face of the weight. An insertion tool is threaded to the balance weight to insert the balance weight through a turbomachinery access opening into the groove. The tool is rotated to locate the second margins below the outer wall portions of the groove. By inserting a driving tool through the insertion tool, the screw is rotated to lock the balance weight to the rotor and in the groove. Upon removal of the insertion and driving tools, a staking tool is inserted through turbine access opening to stake the balance weight and rotor and the screw and balance weight.

    • An adjustable labyrinth seal for a steam turbine wherein the packing rings may be displaced from a larger diameter position, affording a relatively larger shaft clearance, to a smaller diameter position, affording a relatively smaller shaft clearance. Steam conduits are provided in the turbine casing communicating with the annular space between the individual packing rings and the grooves in which they are retained. The rings are provided with seals and are so configured as to maintain pressure- retaining contact with the sidewalls of the grooves. Steam, at a pressure in excess of the operating pressure of the individual seal, may be admitted to the annular space of the upstream ring to controllably effect the displacement thereof. Steam, at the turbine inlet pressure, is admitted to the annular spaces of the remaining rings to effect their displacement. In a further embodiment, one or more of the remaining rings may receive pressurized steam from an external source to control precisely the time at which they close.

    • Brush seals are employed on steam turbine rotors without the risk of causing thermal rotor bowing and without compromising the sealing performance. In one form, a groove in the rotor has an insert in frictional contact with the brush seal. The non-uniform distribution of heat due to frictional contact between the brush seal and proud portions of the rotor is dissipated within the insert such that adjoining rotor portions are substantially uniformly heated without causing thermal bow. In a further form, a groove or grooves are provided in the rotor surface adjacent to the brush seal and maintain non-uniform heat distribution locally in the rotor without causing thermal bow of the rotor. In another form, a land projects radially outwardly of the rotor surface in contact with the brush seal. The non-uniform distribution of heat due to frictional contact between proud portions of the land and the brush seal dissipates into a uniform distribution of heat in the rotor proper to avoid thermal bowing. In a final form, the brush seal has frictional contact with bucket dovetail or wheel protrusions spaced radially outwardly of the rotor such that non-uniform distribution dissipates into a uniform distribution within the rotor.
