[Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] In a press having a vertically movable ram and a stationary bolster plate, a mid-portion of the ram which is counterbalanced by a spring may be swung to an inverted position for replacement &c. of the die. The ram head supported by columns 21 and reciprocated vertically by means described in Specification 647,082 comprises two blocks 30, 31 attached to the tops of columns 21 and a die-carrying mid-portion 35 pivoted thereto on pintles 32, 33, Fig. 5, fixed in the mid-portion by set screws 40, 41. The mid-portion may be swung to an inverted position by a worm 38 (not shown) which rotates a worm gear 39 keyed to the pintle 33, the weight of the mid-portion being counterbalanced by a spring and plunger unit 46 pivoted at 47 to the block 30 and to a crank 44 keyed to the pintle 32. The midportion is normally locked in the horizontal position by pins 54 which project into bushes 56 in the blocks when actuated by connecting rods 57, 58 pivotally affixed in grooves of a wrench-rotated wheel 60.

[Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] In a power press the bolster plate is pivotally supported and may be swung out from under the ram head for replacement of dies &c. The bolster plate 23, Fig. 4, with a leg 63 pivoted at 64 to the frame, is swung out as shown by rotating a bolt 65 pivotally mounted on the leg and threaded into a sleeve 67 pivoted to the frame at 68. The plate is locked in the horizontal position by slideable racked bolts 72, 72a in the frame which are inserted into holes 71 on ears 70 under the plate or removed therefrom for unlocking by rotating a pinion 74 which engages directly with the rack of bolt 72 and moves the bolt 72a, in the opposite direction through interconnected upwardly and downwardly facing racks 78, 79 which turn a pinion 76 engaging the bolt. The ram head is mounted on columns 34 sliding in bearings 35 on the machine frame and attached to a support 52 which is reciprocated vertically by adjustable rods 33 mounted on cranks 32 on a shaft 31. The shaft 31 is driven intermittently as required by an electric motor 20 through a belt 25, pinion 29 and a one-revolution clutch. The clutch comprises a key 40 held in a groove on the shaft by a split ring 61 pivoted to the frame at 62, Fig. 4, the key being pressed into contact with dogs 43, Fig. 7, on a gear-wheel 30 by a spring 41 when released by depressing a pedal 45. The diagonal face 49 on a stop 47 on the pedal normally withholds the key from contact with the dogs and withdraws it during revolution of the shaft when the pedal is released. The height of the ram head is changed by adjusting the length of the connecting rods 33 which comprise upper and lower threaded sockets 48a, 51 with an interconnecting reversely-threaded jack 49 carrying an integral gear-wheel 53. The jacks 49 are rotated to adjust the length by a removable handle 58 on the end of a shaft 57 carrying bevel gears 56 which rotate the gear-wheels 53 through spindles 55 and pinions 54 mounted in the sockets 51.

    • A ram-driven cut-off die set of the double-cut type in which sections of tubing are successively severed from a continuous length of tubing by a notching cut followed by a severing cut wherein improved means are provided for mounting and guiding the notching blade in its notching movement. The improved mounting means comprises an upper shaft positioned over the tube path and extending from one side to the other side of the path, a lower guide shaft positioned totally on the one side of the tube path, and a cross slide having a relatively long upper portion slidably journalled on the upper shaft and a relatively short lower portion journalled on the lower guide shaft to maximize the magnitude of the journalling support provided to the notching blade as it makes its reciprocal movement across the tube path to accomplish the notching cut.

    • A shearing apparatus for bar stock comprising a fixed die and a movable die wherein the movable die comprises a shearing ring carried by an arm at a location intermediate the ends of the arm, an eccentric fixed on a driven shaft is journalled in one end of the arm, and the other end of the arm includes a slot which receives a rotationally mounted slide block so that the slot and slide block coact to accommodate combined rotary and translatory movement of that end of the arm. The described arrangement produces an elliptical loop movement of the movable die relative to the fixed die to cleanly shear the stock. Also disclosed is a novel mandrel assembly including a pair of plug members adapted to be positioned within tubular stock to be cut wherein one of the plug members is mounted for selective radial excursion during the shearing operation to accommodate the eccentric movement of the movable die.

    • A double-cut tube cutoff machine for severing steel tubing in such a way as to produce minimum deformation of the tube in the severed area. The machine comprises a base carrying opposing die jaws to clamp the tube, and a ram assembly which moves vertically and reciprocally relative to the base. The ram carries a sharp-pointed severing blade which actually cuts the tubing. A first cam arrangement synchronizes the opening and closing of the die jaws to clamp the tube during a transverse slotting operation as well as during the final severing step. A second cam arrangement synchronizes the motion of a cross slide to ram movement to drive a slotting blade transversely across the tube to notch or slot the top wall part way through prior to the severing operation. The slotting blade is carried in a blade holder which receives inserts of varying thickness so slotting blades of conversely varying thickness all pass over the workpiece in the plane of the severing blade.
