    • 610,543. Feeding webs; sheet-delivery apparatus. ASHTON BROS., & CO., Ltd., and BAYES, A. W. Nov. 30, 1945, No. 32356. [Class 100(i)] A textile fabric or the like manufactured in continuous strip form with a ridge or like raised recurring formation in between or forming part of a pattern or other recurring feature, is cut into lengths in predetermined positions in relation to the pattern &c. by a cutter. mounted on - a feeder member slidable over the plane surface of the pattern but adapted to engage the ridge. As shown, fabric is drawn intermittently off a roll 57 by a spool 57b with which a roller 60 carried by an arm 59 co-operates, the pulley being driven by a pawl carried by a sprocket 61 oscillated by a chain 62 carrying a weight on one end and attached at the other end to an arm 63 fixed to a shaft 32. The fabric forms a loop and then passes down a channel 52 and under a weighted drag 55 to a guillotine 29 carried by a reciprocating feedblock 20. A section of the web is pulled forward at each cycle of the machine by the forward edge of a stirrup 21 which is pivoted at 22 to the block 20 and the forward end of which engages a ridge on the fabric to commence the feed at the correct time relative to the guillotine 29; the latter co-operates with one edge of a slot 28 in the block and a guide pin 20c prevents lateral movement of the fabric during severance. During the inward stroke of the block, the stirrup, which is supported by toggles 24 is in the raised position and towards the end of the stroke the toggle pivot engages a stop 26 to collapse the toggles and allow the stirrup to fall. The stirrup is, however, supported by an adjustable bracket 56 projecting from the drag 55 and drops off on to the fabric during the return stroke to engage behind the ridge; the stirrup is subsequently raised by engagement of the toggles with a stop 25 which may be adjustable to vary the position of the cut. The guillotine is oscillated about a pivot by a rod 34 connected to a lever 31 rocked about the shaft 32 by a cam 15 on a shaft 12 carrying also a cam 16 for reciprocating the block 20 through a lever 18 pivoted at 19. On the upward stroke of the guillotine, a finger carried thereby raises the leading end of the fabric clear of the edge of the slot 28. The cut labels are delivered by a belt 38 into a shoot 44 in which they are packed against the action of a resilient member 52 by a cam-actuated pusher 45. The packed labels pass under a guide 51 adapted to restrain them and so provide a space for the next label.

    • 507,684. Coiling slivers. ASHTON BROS. & CO., Ltd., and BAYES, A. W. Feb. 24, 1938, No. 5811. [Class 120 (iii)] The sliver-coiling mechanism of a carding- engine or other textile machine is converted for use with a can or container C of diameter larger than the usual A, Fig. 3, by altering the relative dispositions of the axis of the container and of the locus or path of rotation D of the hole in the upper revolving coiler plate whereby a larger diameter container can be accommodated without being obstructed by the adjacent framework of the coiler mechanism or of the machine while permitting the sliver to be coiled down in the container so that its coils touch the wall of the container. The usual central hole, E or F, is-left in the coiled sliver and the diameter of the container C should be at least two inches greater than, that of the container A. : Where possible the axis of the container and of the lower revolving plate may be moved along the vertical plane BEF by an amount equal to the increase in radius of the container, B representing the axis of the vertical driving shaft. Alternatively the upper coiler plate and the lower supporting plate are moved relatively and through an angle YBE, Fig. 4, to produce the coils D or the movements of Figs. 3 and 4 may be combined as shown in Fig. 5. In applying this last method to the coiler of a revolving flat carding-engine the base a, Fig. 7, is cut away centrally at a and the bearing plate b and support plate c moved so that the axis moves from X to X , a false bottom d being inserted and an auxiliary plate c mounted on the plate c. The carrier wheel 7 of the driving train 2 .. 8 is mounted on a stud e supported in a slot e in an arm e the other end of which is forked to embrace the boss b of the plate b, the wheel being thereby adjustable along the arm e and angularly therewith. The upper coiler plate g, Fig. 8, is' raised on a spacing block and a packing plate m with an extension piece i inserted beneath the member f to cover the larger container. A sliver hole ml is provided in the plate m.
