摘要： The current invention provides an apparatus for holding small amount of liquid at a greater depth. Preferable dimensions of the apparatus take the form of a conventional microtiter plate, with evenly spaced arrays of wells in rows and columns. The wells are designed in a slot form, wherein all the slots in a microtiter plate are parallel to either the rows or columns of the array of wells. Alternatively, the wells can take the shape of a steep cone. Microtiter plates with wells so designed enable significant reduction of dead volume in liquid transfer.

摘要： A method for coating a substrate with silane that comprises contacting in an inert environment a substrate with a vapor containing a bifunctional silane, preferably a bifunctional silane containing an acrylic functionality. The method may further comprise the step of attaching a coating of polyacrylamide to the acrylic functionality by in-situ polymerization or the step of immobilizing acrylic-modified molecules by copolymerization with the acrylic functionality of the bifunctional silane. The substrate may be a capillary, a microchip, a bead, or a slide, preferably of glass. A substrate coated using the instant method, as well as a method for reducing EOF in capillaries used for electrophoresis are also disclosed.

摘要： An apparatus for filling and cleaning channels and inlet ports of a microchip substrate is disclosed. A device of the apparatus comprising an array of tubes is inserted into each of the inlet ports of the microchip. The array of tubes of the device comprises a plurality of pressure tubes, surrounded by a plurality of vacuum tubes. In conjunction with this, pressurized solutions such as matrix or wash are introduced into common openings on the microchip that provide a passage to microchannels of the microchip with the use of pressure tip injectors of the apparatus. As matrix or wash solutions are pumped through the common openings and microchannels of the microchip substrate, wash solutions are pumped through the plurality of pressure tubes and everything is vacuumed through the plurality of vacuum tubes surrounding the plurality of pressure tubes. Various reservoirs of solutions are selected and allowed to flow by proper valve actuation. This process can be performed manually or easily automated by utilizing appropriate valves and control hardware/software.

摘要： Structures and methods that facilitate integration and/or isolation of various functions in a microchip system are disclosed. In one embodiment, the integration of the functions is by a multi-chip, sliding linear valve approach. The chips are in continued physical contact. In a second embodiment, the chips are separated and rejoined when they are moved to the preferred position. Surface coating of the joining edges helps prevent leakage and keeps liquid in the capillary channels for both embodiments. Another embodiment relates to miniature valves. Several designs were disclosed, including the linear, edge-contact sliding valve approach. Method to fabricate very small, high aspect ratio holes in glass was also disclosed, which facilitates the above embodiments.

The first channel 24 includes dimensions such that the fluid to be dispensed is conducted through the channel by capillary action.
