    • 314,792. American Electric Co., Inc., (Assignees of Anderson, C. A.). July 2, 1928, [Convention date]. Resistances, inductances, and capacities, measuring. - Impedances are compared by means of an alternating - current detector adapted to be coupled to two circuits including the impedances to be compared and so coupled that when the alternating currents flowing therein bear a predetermined ratio, no alternating current will flow through the detector. A portable test set for locating faults, as described in Specification 293,378, may be employed in conjunction with an auxiliary portable set, the generator G, telephone receiver R and finder coil 20 of the test set being employed in conjunction with calibrated resistances 6, 7, 8, a potentiometer resistance 9, and insulated parallel wires 2, 3 enclosed in a tube 16, forming the auxiliary set. The auxiliary set is connected to the generator G of the test set by means of clips and flexible leads 12, 13, and to the resistances to be measured by means of flexible leads 10, 11 and clips 30, 31 The finder 20 of the test set is clamped around the tube 16 of the auxiliary set. A preliminary adjustment is made by connecting together the clips 30, 31, setting the resistances 6, 7, 8 to zero, and adjusting the potentiometer resistance 9 until no sound is heard in the receiver R on operating the generator G. Equal and opposite currents are then flowing in the wires 2, 3, which are in parallel circuits, one circuit including the resistances 6, 7, 8 and the other including the clips 30, 31. The resistance to be measured is then connected between the clips 30, 31 and the resistances 6, 7, 8 are adjusted until no sound is heard, the resistances 6, 7, 8 being then equal to the resistance under test. For testing rail bonds, copper wire brushes may be substituted for the clips 30, 31. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states also that in the case where a complete set for measuring resistances, inductances, or capacities is required to be independent of the test set, the wires 2, 3 may be replaced by two primary windings of a transformer, the secondary winding of which replaces the finder coil 20. The primary windings may have equal numbers of turns, or a variable ratio of turns may be provided. The generator G may be replaced by other sources of alternating current, for example a thermionic valve oscillator. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
