    • 1,155,499. Lifting barges; taking up slack. ALLIANCE MACHINE CO. 9 May, 1968 [26 Dec., 1967], No. 22137/68. Headings B8B and B8H. [Also in Division E2] A lifting beam 25, Fig. 4, for engaging barges which are lifted and stowed in a ship by a travelling crane, has pivoted arms 23 to which lifting sheaves 21 are attached so that as the barges move up and down with the swell of the sea the arms prevent the development of slack in the cables by moving between stops 30, 31 attached to guides 29. Lugs 33 on the barge fit into sockets 32a on the beam 25 where they are locked by pins 35 moved by rams 39. When the barge is being raised the beam 25 is guided by a shoe 55, Fig. 3, which runs in a vertical guide slot 70 on the stern of the ship, and is controlled by pivoted rams 61. Further guide rollers 45, moved by rams 52 co-operate with guideways 53 on the crane gantry when the barge has been raised above the ship. The beam is also used to remove the hatch covers. Fig. 2 shows the arrangement of the crane on the deck of the ship.

    • 1289872 Releasable fastenings ALLIANCE MACHINE CO 4 March 1970 [9 July 1969] 10347/70 Heading E2B Tie-down mechanism for releasably holding an object against movement relative to a fixed structure, comprises a first link 23 pivotally connected at its one end to the fixed structure, a tie-down link 24 pivotally connected at its one end to the other end of the first link and free at its other end, said free other end being engageable over a tie-down pad 15 fast to the object, and extensible and contractable operating means 26 pivotally connected at its one end to the fixed structure and at its other end to the toggle constituted by the two links at a point adjacent the pivotal connection between the links, the arrangement being such that when the two links are substantially in line with one another and the free end of the tie-down link is engaged over the tie-down pad, contraction of the operating means will cause relative angular movement of the two links, reducing the overall length of the toggle and applying a tractive force between the structure and the object. As described four of the tie down mechanisms are used for securing a gantry crane to the deck of a ship in storms; the deck carries rails 11 for the crane 12 having a four legs 14 with wheels 13 engaging the rails. Each leg is provided with one of the pads 15 extending from the side thereof which are engageable by the link 24 of respective tie-down mechanisms. The deck carries a platform alongside each rail made up of a pair of spaced vertical members 17, 18 and a top member 19, the top member being provided with upstanding post 20 carrying a shaft 22 to which the first link 23 of a pair of the tie down mechanism is pivoted. The tiedown link 24 of each mechanism consists of a U shaped rod which carries a screw jack mechanism 25 the rod 24 being engageable with the upper side of one of the lugs 15 and the jack with its underside. The extensible and contractable means 26 is a turn-buckle mechanism which is pivotally connected to the top member 19 of the platform and to the free end portion of the link 23 adjacent its pivot with the tie down rod 24. The rod 24 carries a crank arm 27 which is connected by a hydraulic jack to the top member 19 of the platform. Operation of the jack rotates the rod 24 from its clamping position on pad 15 to a releasing position substantially at right angles to the clamping position. Fixed to the platform are a plurality of screw jacks for engaging the legs to prevent side movement and the platform also pivotally carries screw jacks which are engageable with hooks on the respective legs to prevent the crane moving along the rails.

    • 850,625. Ingot-strippers. ALLIANCE MACHINE CO. May 2, 1958, No. 14023/58. Class 83 (1). An ingot-stripping machine comprises verticallymovable hoisting means mounted on a carrier 12 movable on a bridge 10. The bridge travels on rails 11 and the trolley or carrier 12 thereon carries a motordriven drum 14 controlling cables 14a which support a housing 16. A frame 18 is rotatable within the housing 16 on bearings 19, 20 by a motor 24. The frame 18 carries a piston 29 on which slides a cylinder 28 under the control of a motor-driven pump 26. The frame also supports lifting links 35, which fit beneath the lugs 36 on a small-end-up ingot mould 37 to be stripped. With the mould so held, the cylinder 28 having an extension 34 can be moved to eject an ingot. To release a big-end-up ingot, jaws 43 are closed about the hot-top by wedges 40 moved upwardly by a cylindrical member engaged by the cylinder 28. Lugs 35b on the links 35 engage the mould to prevent it being raised. The links 35 can be moved by rods 48 and levers 47 to disengage the mould and to then engage the ingot with bits 46 to lift it clear of the mould. The rods 48 are controlled through equalizing links 49 by fluidpressure devices 50 supplied by a pump 53.
