    • A system (10) for welding training is described. In one example, a welding training system (10) includes a display (26) configured to show welding features related to a training welding operation. The system (10) also includes a training workpiece (42) having a substantially transparent weld joint configured to be placed adjacent to the display (26) during the training welding operation. The system (10) includes a processing device (22) coupled to the display (26) and configured to provide welding data relating to the training welding operation to the display (26). The system (10) also includes a training torch (12) comprising an optical sensor (18). The training torch (12) is coupled to the processing device (22) and configured to provide the processing device (22) with data from the optical sensor (18) corresponding to a position of the training torch (12) relative to the training workpiece (42).

    • Welding system and method permit exchange of data with Smart Grid monitors and/or controllers. The welding systems include a welding power supply (42) configured to convert power between the power grid (12) and the welding power supply (42). A grid interface (54) cooperates with control circuitry (52) to transmit data to and/or from the grid monitors and/or controllers on the grid side. The control circuitry (52) may control operation of the welding power supply (42) based upon data from the grid (12). The system may include power generation devices (58) (e.g., engine-drive generators) and energy storage devices (60) (e.g., batteries). The control circuitry (52) may control operation of such devices, the exchange of power between them, and the draw of power from the grid or the application of power to the grid based upon the data exchanged with the grid monitors and/or controllers.
