    • 555,826. Lubricants for ammunition. REMING- TON ARMS CO., Inc., SCHILLING, A. A., and CURRAN, T. B. July 16, 1941, No. 8975. [Class 91] Ammunition components viz. projectiles, bullets, shotgun pellets, wads, and cartridge cases whether of metal or paper are coated with a solid lubricant containing not less than 5 per cent of refined micro-crystalline petrolatum wax, having a melting point between 120‹F and 180‹F obtained from the heavy oil lubricating fraction which lies above 'the paraffin wax fraction or light lubricating oil distillates off petroleum. Ceresin from ozokerite is excluded from the scope of this invention. The lubricant may contain as lower melting point ingredients one or more of the substances paraffin scale, paraffin wax, petrolatum, ozokerite, oleostearine, and mixtures off solid fatty alcohols containing at least 14 carbon atoms in the molecule. According to examples the lubricant may consist of (1) 45 per cent petrolatum wax and 55 per cent paraffin scale: (2) 20 per cent. petrolatum wax, 20 per cent. petrolatum, and 60 per cent. paraffin wax ; (3) 24 per cent petrolatum wax, 35 per cent high melting petrolatum, 26 per cent. ozokerite, and 25 per cent oleostearine. The composition is not tacky to the touch, does' not collect particles of dust or grit or foreign matter. and maintains a high accuracy test when used with .22 calibre rifle ammunition.

    • Ammunition has one or more of the following components, namely projectiles, bullets, shotgun pellets, wads, and cartridge cases formed of metal or other materials, e.g. paper, provided with a coating of a solid lubricant consisting of one or more higher alcohols containing at least 14 carbon atoms, with or without a proportion of a high melting point wax amounting to not more than 75 per cent by weight of the total lubricant. Specified alcohols are palmityl and stearyl alcohols, and cuts having melting points between those of palmityl and stearyl alcohol or between those of stearyl and cetyl alcohol. The waxes specified are high melting petroleum derivatives, ozocerite, ceresin, bees-wax, carnauba wax, candelilla wax, bayberry wax, Chinese insect wax and synthetic waxes obtained by chlorinating aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. naphthalene. The lubricant may be applied to the components in the melted condition, as a dispersion, e.g. in water, or as a solution, e.g. in aliphatic hydrocarbons derived from petroleum, e.g. benzene, aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. benzol, toluene and xylene, or chlorinated hydrocarbons, e.g. carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, ethylene dichloride and trichlorethylene.
