    • An apparatus, method, system, and computer-program product for magneto-optic (MO) switching produces magneto-optic materials in blue and green light wavelengths. An MO switching apparatus includes a first waveguide supporting a propagation of a radiation signal from a first port to a second port; a second waveguide including a second port; and a ring-oscillator having a closed propagation pathway including magneto-optic materials, said ring-oscillator operationally coupled to said waveguides and responsive to a controlling influence to switch between a first mode and a second mode, with said first mode substantially non-interfering with said propagation of said radiation signal in said first waveguide and with said second mode routing said propagation of said radiation signal from said first port to said second port.

    • A system, method, and computer program product for using thin metallic films as an MO material suitable for propagating visible radiation. The system includes an apparatus having a substrate transparent to a radiation signal having a wavelength in a visible frequency range; a regularly perforated metallic layer having a plurality of apertures, each aperture having a diameter not greater than about the wavelength divided by four, the apertures arranged into a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns of a regular matrix providing centers of the apertures disposed about the wavelength apart along the rows and the columns; and a magnetic field generating structure disposed over the metallic layer. The method includes a) propagating a radiation signal through a substrate, the radiation signal including a radiation component at a wavelength in a visible frequency range; b) imposing the radiation signal on a regularly perforated metallic layer having a plurality of apertures, each aperture having a diameter not greater than about the wavelength divided by four, the apertures arranged into a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns of a regular matrix providing centers of the apertures disposed about the wavelength apart along the rows and the columns to pass the radiation component; and c) influencing the radiation component using a magnetic field generally parallel to a propagation direction of the radiation component to variably change a polarization angle responsive to the magnetic field.

    • The present disclosure provides an optical sensor for sensing a property of a fluid. The optical sensor comprises an optical waveguide that has a core region. The optical waveguide has a region for guiding light to and from the fluid. A sensing region is arranged to provide an optical response to the guided light. The sensing region has a recess extending into at least a part of the core region. The recess has an opening for receiving the fluid and first and second surfaces for reflecting at least a portion of the light. The first and second surfaces are spaced apart from each other by a first distance along the core region. The sensing region further comprises at least one further surface for reflecting at least a portion of the light. The further surface is spaced apart along the core region from the second and first surfaces by a second and third distance, respectively.

    • The present disclosure provides an optical device for selecting specific matter, such as plant matter. The device comprises a light source for emitting light having at least (3) wavelengths and for generating a combined beam of light having the at least 3 wavelengths. The device further comprises an optical element for directing a plurality of light beams towards matter including the specific matter. The optical element has first surface portions through which in use the plurality of component light beams are directed to the matter including the specific matter. Each component light beam is directed through a respective first surface portion that has an optical property that is selected so that light intensity differences between the component light beams are reduced. The optical device also comprises an optical filter for filtering reflected component light beams such that an intensity of light is reduced in a wavelengths range outside one or more wavelengths ranges that include the at least three wavelengths. Further, the optical device comprises a detector for detecting the reflected component light beams.
