    • A method of electrostimulation of the muscles of a subject is provided, the method comprising applying to the subject a plurality electrical pulses to induce contraction of at least one muscle of the subject, each pulse having a pulse width of at least 0.5 milliseconds. An apparatus for the electrostimulation of the muscles of a subject is also provided, the apparatus comprising a generator for generating a plurality of electrical pulses; means for applying the electrical pulses to the subject to induce contraction of at least one muscle of the subject; wherein the generator is operable to produce a plurality of electrical pulses each having a pulse width of at least 0.5 milliseconds.

    • Apparatus (30) is described for detecting electrical conductivity between a subject (41) and a device (1) for electrical stimulation of the subject (41). The apparatus (30) comprises a first electrical contact (51) adapted to contact skin of the subject (41) in a first location (42) and a second electrical contact (52) adapted to contact the skin of the subject (41) in a second location (43). There is also a processor (21) having an output coupled to the first electrical contact (51) and an input coupled to the second electrical contact (52) and an output device (26) coupled to the processor (21). The processor (21) is configured to output an alternating voltage signal (40) to the first electrical contact (51) and to receive a response signal from the second electrical contact (52). The processor (21) is further configured to either: (a) send an output signal to the output device (26) in response to the received response signal, the output signal corresponding to the received response signal and being indicative of the electrical conductivity between the device (1) and the subject (41), in use; or (b) send an output signal to the output device (26) if a voltage amplitude of the response signal received by the processor (21) is below a threshold, the output signal being indicative that the electrical conductivity between the subject (41) and the device (1) is below the threshold.
