    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for densifying a porous product with improvement of densification of the porous substrate by using a film boiling process, in particular, to provide a method and apparatus permitting more complete densification of a substrate (i.e., densification closer to the surface of the substrate).
      SOLUTION: The method permits more complete densification of a substrate (preform) 110 by selectively providing a barrier 100 that reduces cooling of the surface of the substrate 110 being densified caused by contact with the relatively cool boiling liquid precursor of the densifying material, such as carbon. In particular, the contact between the substrate 110 and the liquid precursor is reduced by utilizing a structure forming an insulator gas layer between one or two physical barriers (such as a mesh material) 100 or the substrate 110 with the liquid precursor (such as a plate spaced apart from the surface of the porous substrate). The barrier 100 is moved into optional position before the applied power level increases sharply near the end of the film boiling densification process.

      SOLUTION: The vessel (3) is fitted internally with a pin (6) of elastically deformable material comprising firstly a key (8) that extends toward an opening of the vessel (3) and includes a curved end (9) that projects beyond an edge of the vessel (3), and secondly a finger (10) that extends toward the bottom of the vessel (3), and is oriented toward the center thereof, so that when the cartridge (4) is put into the vessel (3), the finger (10) is pushed back by the cartridge (4) and forces the key (8) to retract so that its curved end no longer projects radially from the vessel (3), the cartridge (4) fitted with an external obstacle (14) that co-operates with one end of the finger (10) in order to prevent the cartridge (4) from being withdrawn from the vessel (3).
