    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing progeny for generally acting to a neural stem cell and a neuronal precursor cell (collectively referred to as "NSC") for substituting a neuron or other cell types of nervous system being damaged, being defective, or being at risk of dying. SOLUTION: A method for modulating neurogenesis in vitro and in vivo has been disclosed. The methods comprise contacting neural stem cells with an effective amount of a FTY720 compound. The neurogenesis may include the modulation of proliferation, differentiation, migration or survival of a non-embryonic neural stem cells or progenitor cells. There is also provided a method for preventing or treating neurological disorders, including Parkinson's disease, paralysis agitans, Huntington's disease, Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal cord ischaemia, ischemic stroke, spinal cord injury, brain damage associated with cancer, spinal cord injury associated with cancer, and Shy-Drager syndrome, or the like, comprising a step of administering to a subject a therapeutically effective amount of a FTY720 compound.
