    • A closure cap (10) is provided with an audible warning when the cap (10) is removed from a container (12). The closure cap (10) preventing the inadvertent consumption of pharmaceutical products, bleaches or other products by children or other minors. In use, the closure cap (10) may be provided with child resilient means and can be screwed on to any standard container (12). When the cap (10) is removed from the container (12), mechanical energy is expended by the user and such mechanical energy is converted to sufficient electrical energy using a piezoelectrical element (14) contained in the cap (10). The electrical energy generated is then conditioned and stored using signal conditioning electronics (26) such that an alarm signal of sufficient level is sounded. In use, the piezoelectrical element (14) is interposed between two sprung steel sections (16) formed as a dome and the action of unscrewing the cap (10) causes the sprung sections (16) to snap back producing a large dynamic force on said piezoelectrical element (14) which produces a large voltage output.

    • This invention relates to a nulling current transformer. More particularly, this invention relates to a nulling current transformer for accurately detecting current and giving an improved response, accuracy and stability using toroidal current transformer technology along with active components. This invention finds particular application in switchgear devices such as residual current devices and metering operations. The nulling current transformer is implemented in a closed magnetic core having at least one primary winding inductively coupled thereto. A secondary winding is also inductively coupled to said magnetic core, the secondary winding being responsive to any magnetic flux generated in said magnetic core. A separate tertiary winding is also inductively coupled to said magnetic core, the tertiary winding being responsive to any magnetic flux generated in the magnetic core. A nulling means is also provided for receiving the output of said tertiary winding and nulling the received output, the nulled output of the nulling means being connected to the input of said secondary winding such that it serves to cancel the magnetic flux in the magnetic core.

    • This invention relates to a method and apparatus for monitoring the earth loop impedance of an electrical installation that is protected by a circuit protection device, such as a residual current device. The method and apparatus enabling an earth loop impedance test to be performed on an electrical installation without tripping the circuit protection device. In use, the present invention is achieved using an earth loop impedance tester that automatically signals to any circuit protection devices present in the electrical installation that an earth loop impedance test is about to be performed. The circuit protection device can detect the earth loop impedance tester's signal sequence which comprises a first part of the sequence to disable operation of the circuit protection device for a predetermined interval and a second part of the sequence to monitor the earth loop impedance of the electrical installation. The second part of the sequence, which monitors the earth loop impedance of the electrical installation, is representative of the normal supply frequency of 50Hz or 60Hz. After this predetermined interval during which an earth loop impedance test has been performed, the circuit protection device reverts back to its normal mode of operation.

    • A method and apparatus for verifying the authenticity of bank notes or other notes having a security thread embedded therein is provided. Said method and apparatus enabling both small businesses and individuals to determine the authenticity of bank notes when they are taken or received as payment for goods or services and also enabling financial institutions and banks to determine the authenticity of large volumes of bank notes. In use, a small, highly reliable, cost effective unit is provided which accurately and instantaneously determines the authenticity of bank notes. The apparatus comprises a scanning unit for obtaining various characteristics of the bank note being scrutinised, the scanning unit comprising at least one light source disposed opposite to at least one detector, wherein said at least one detector outputs a signal responsive to the transmitted light. Said at least one light source and said at least one detector being disposed such that the bank note can pass therebetween. As the bank note is swiped between the at least one light source and at least one detector the resultant output is processed, digitally encoded and correlated with stored characteristics corresponding to the transmission properties of an authentic bank note. These stored characteristics corresponding to the transmission properties of an authentic bank note are obtained by calibrating the apparatus with an authentic bank note. The method and apparatus can also be implemented to authenticate large volumes of bank notes, suitably for financial institutions and banks, at a speed normally associated with units that can be used to count bank notes and verify accurately the amounts counted.
