    • A protection system for an electrical power network uses a method of determining the times of capture of current signals obtained by protection devices (3A, 3B) at first and second spaced points along a power line. Measurements are captured at the first device (3A) and sent to the second device (3B), which captures a second measurement and sends a reply to the first device. The timing of both measurements is synchronised using a GPS signal, and the total propagation time (tp1 + tp2) of the outward and return signals (S1, S2) is stored in a memory. In the event that the GPS signal is lost, the stored propagation time is used to calculate the actual time of the second measurement relative to the first measurement.

    • An environmentally benign steam power cycle (10) facilitates separation and capture of carbon dioxide from its combustion products. In the steam power cycle an oxy-combustion superheater (12) superheats steam (13A) previously evaporated from feedwater (28) in a steam generator (20), the resulting superheated steam and combustion products being used to drive a steam turbine (16) for power generation (18). The feedwater (28) is evaporated, referably raised to at least its critical point, and preferably given some superheat, by regenerative heat exchange in the steam generator, which comprises a heat exchange network (20A, 20B), in which (i) sensible heat is transferred to the feedwater from the exhaust stream of the turbine and (ii) sensible and latent heat is transferred to the feedwater from a plurality of turbine bleed streams (P1, P2, P3), including a turbine bleed stream (P1) taken at about half the critical pressure of steam from just after the highest pressure stage (14,15) of the turbine, and (iii) sensible heat is transferred to the feedwater from condensates of the turbine bleed streams. The feedwater (28) for the steam generator is produced by (i) condensation of steam from the turbine bleed streams (P1, P2, P3) during transfer of their heat of condensation to the feedwater in a plurality of heat exchange stages, and (ii) condensation of steam from the turbine exhaust stream (E) after transfer of its sensible heat to the feedwater in a plurality of heat exchange stages. Carbon dioxide produced in the oxy-combustion process is easily captured (26, 36) when the steam from the turbine exhaust stream and the turbine bleed streams is condensed, thereby leaving most of the carbon dioxide behind as a gas to be extracted from the cycle.

    • The present invention provides a matrix converter (4) that can be used as part of a two-stage power converter.     • A stator assembly (1) for an electrical rotating machine, such as a high-speed 2-pole motor or generator. Along the length of the assembly (1), alternate first slot openings (22), covered by the channel members (8), and alternate second slot openings (24), extending circumferentially between the channel members, are obturated, but in staggered relationship to each other. This arrangement enables increased economy of manufacture and increased cooling efficiency.

    • The invention provides a multi-transformer unit (20) for converting an input AC voltage at a first voltage level HV to a net output AC voltage at a second voltage level LV. The multi-transformer unit (20) can be used in place of a conventional transformer or an AC machine and is designed to suppress the transfer of harmonics between the input and output AC voltages. The unit comprises at least two phase-shifting transformers (22, 24), each transformer being operative to provide a phase shift relative to the first voltage level HV. On the primary side of the unit the transformers (22, 24) are arranged for independent connection to the first voltage level, whereas on the secondary side of the unit the transformers are linked such that voltage vectors on the secondary side of the unit are added together to at least partially cancel the harmonic pollution and give the net output AC voltage. Moreover, the phase shift of the phase-shifting transformers may be selected to completely or substantially add into the net AC output voltage of the multi-transformer unit (20) the fundamental voltage/frequency applied to its input AC voltage.

    • A rotor assembly, for example for a high-speed synchronous machine, comprises a generally cylindrical rotor body mounted to rotate on an axix of rotation. Conductors of the rotor windings are mounted in axially extending slots on the rotor body and are retained in the slots by conductive slot wedges (38). The conductors emerge from the slots to extend at least partially circumferentially around opposed ends of the rotor body. The conductive materials have a lower electrical resistivity than that of the end bell and may be copper or silver. The conductive ring (48) carries low frequency rotor-induced currents and the conductive coating (52) carries high frequency stator-induced currents.

    • Various mountings are disclosed for holding a portable screen device in an attitude for hands- free viewing.
