摘要： The present invention is a system of at least one cordless telephone, a home base station and at least one non-home base station. A roaming cordless telephone out of range of its home base station will use a non-home base station to direct digital mode signals to its home base station. The home base station will convert the digital mode signals to analog signals and communicate them with the telephone network. Only a single direct line connection is needed for the home base station, as the digital mode signals and the analog signals communications do not interfere with each other. The user may potentially avoid long distance charges by using the non-home base station as a conduit while using the home base station as the telephone network site for long distance charge accrual. Further, the necessity for using a cellular telephone with the consequent charges is avoided.

A repeater within the line-of-sight of the ductless HVAC system is used in concert with a remote thermostat. A user may operate the remote thermostat as desired, and the remote thermostat generates and broadcasts an RF signal stream responsive to the user-entry. This suitably encoded RF signal stream penetrates any wall or other opaque impediment to light frequency transmission and is received by the repeater, decoded by the repeater, re-encoded by the repeater into a signal suitable for driving an IR transmitter and broadcast as an IR beam to the receiver/interface.

摘要： Apparatus for eliminating the necessity for manually dialing a local area code as a prefix to a call within the same area code in telephone systems in which such action is a requirement. An automatic dialer is activated and immediately transmits the local area code onto the caller's telephone line when an off-hook condition is sensed; e.g., when a telephone handset is picked up. Thus, the caller can merely then dial an ordinary seven digit telephone number within the local area code. In order to provide for the selective dialing of long distance, when the caller "flashes" his line within a predetermined period (typically, a few seconds) after picking it up, a hang-up followed by a second off-hook is emulated; however, the automatic dialer is inhibited from again transmitting the area code. Consequently, the caller is presented with a dial tone, and a telephone number, including an area code which may be different from the local area code, may be successfully dialed.

A comparator compares each digit string dialed on the telephone to the predetermined digit strings, and, if a match is sensed, a dialer sends onto the telephone line at least one DTMF digit, such as a "#", which will defeat the call in progress. In a variant of the unauthorized call defeat apparatus, if an unauthorized digit string is dialed, a mode of operation can be selected in which an audio tone, falling outside the standard passbands of all tones representing dialed digits, is applied to the telephone line so as to "jam" and thus prevent any meaningful communication on the line. The invention can be implemented as a stand alone device or incorporated into a telephone.

摘要： In order to determine the prospective long term improvement to a diseased eye obtained by performing a treatment such as retinal laser surgery, the diameters of the four major arteriole blood vessels are measured, preferably digitally, and summed before the treatment at positions substantially equidistant from the center of the region where they converge and enter the optic nerve head. After the eye heals, the diameters of the blood vessels are digitally remeasured, and the degree of reduction of the second value with respect to the first value is determined. The reduction is compared to a predetermined reduction range (as obtained, for example, from a computer database of known results) which is representative of known degrees of long term improvement to obtain an indication of the expected long term results of the subject eye and the adequacy of the treatment. The same procedure may be employed to predict the results of medical or surgical retinal interventions other than retinal laser surgery, and a similar procedure may be employed to help establish the suitability of medical or surgical retinal interventions, including laser surgery, on a given eye by comparing the retinal blood vessel measurements taken before any such intervention to corresponding measurements of a reference eye (e.g., a normal eye) and applying a maximum acceptable difference between the two.
