    • A rubber-modified styrenic resin composition prepared by dissolving a rubbery polymer in a styrenic monomer and subjecting the obtained solution to graft polymerization, characterized in that: (1) the rubbery polymer is dispersed in the styrenic polymer matrix in the form of particles having a volume-mean particle diameter ranging from 0.5 to 1.6 mu m, (2) the dispersed particles of the rubbery polymer have a salami-like structure wherein a portion of the styrenic polymer is dispersed and included in the particles in a particulate state having a number-mean particle diameter of 0.13 to 0.20 mu m and a particle size distribution of 1.15 to 1.35, and (3) the swell ratio of the dispersed particles of the rubbery polymer in toluene lies within a range of 7 to 12. This composition is excellent in mechanical strengths, gloss and colorability and is well-balanced among these characteristics.

    • The invention provides a novel polyimide containing silicate groups, which is excellent in mechanical and electrical properties, heat resistance and also the formability into film, and a film-forming heat-resistant material excellent in solvent and bending resistances and bondability. The polyimide has repeating units each represented by general formula (1) and is produced from a tetracarboxylic acid anhydride and a diamine having at least one alkyl silicate group as the side-chain substituent. In said formula (1) Ar1 represents a tetravalent organic group; R1 and R2 are absent or each represents C1-C4 alkylene or phenylene; R3 to R7, R9 and R10 represent each C1-C6 hydrocarbyl; R8 represents ethylene or C3-C6 alkylene; m and n represent each independently an integer of 1 to 10; and k represents an integer of 0 to 2.

    • A process for the preparation of needle coke for graphite electrodes, characterized by treating coal or petroleum needle coke, prior to the mixing thereof with a binder pitch, with a solution or suspension of an iron oxide or a compound which can be converted into an iron oxide through a reaction or decomposition when heated together with the coke to thereby incorporate 0.1 to 15 wt.% of the iron oxide or the compound into the needle coke, and subjecting the resulting coke, which is impregnated with the iron oxide or the compound and/or contains the same in a state adhering thereto, to heat treatment at 300 to 1,600 DEG C or calcination at 1,200 to 1,600 DEG C. The process makes it possible independently of the kind of the feedstock coke to give a needle coke which permits a reduction in the puffing occurring in the production of a graphite electrode, an enhancement in the yield of the graphitization step and an improvement in the product characteristics such as electrode strength.
