    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for improving the measurement of force variation in a tire to be tested with tire uniformity measurement apparatus.
      SOLUTION: This apparatus includes a load wheel assembly including a load wheel, connected to a load sensor for detecting the force applied to the load wheel by a tire to be tested. To detect the vibration of the load wheel by any other force than the one applied by the tire, the vibration sensor is linked to the load wheel assembly. To provide more accurate uniformity data of a tire, there is provided a means of subtracting a force induced by vibration from the force applied by the tire. A vibration sensor composed of an accelerometer is used to determine the force causing vibration in the lateral and radial directions with respect to the load wheel. A signal obtained by the accelerometer is transmitted to a differential amplifier which accepts a signal from the load cell in the same way. All signals indicate more accurately an actual vibrating force generated by a tire to be tested.

      SOLUTION: The adjustable width chuck apparatus includes a first chuck adapted to receive a half-rim for contacting the bead of a tire, a first chuck including a rotatable spindle including a tapered male portion; a second chuck adapted to receive a half-rim for contacting the bead of a tire and movable toward and away from the first chuck; a second chuck including an extensible, rotatable chuck member, including a tapered female portion configured to receive the tapered male portion of the rotatable spindle; and a fluid-pressure-operated actuator operable to extend the chuck member with respect to the second chuck to move the tapered female portion into engagement with the tapered male portion of the spindle, wherein the actuator is disposed on an external portion of the chuck and provides a visual indication of the position of the extensible, tapered female portion of the chuck member with respect to the second chuck.

    • A tire uniformity testing machine that includes a base, a pair of vertical spaced apart columns supporting an upper cross frame member. The base carries a load wheel carriage movable towards and away from a testing station. The vertical uprights establish a peripheral footprint plane that does not extend beyond a plane that is tangent to an outer rolling surface of the load wheel when it is redirected. The upper frame member includes clearance spaces and cutouts that enable at least a portion of an upper chuck to move into the upper frame member and a super structure mounted to a top of the cross member that mounts at least a portion of an actuator for translating the upper chuck. The configuration establishes a machine height that enables the machine to be loaded into a standard shipping container and reduces the overall footprint of the tire uniformity machine without compromising its ability to precisely sense tire uniformity parameters.
