    • An improved ultrasonic imaging system specially adapted for examination of a female breast utilizing direct imaging (twodimensional) or holographic imaging (three-dimensional) techniques. Improvements in both types of ultrasonic imaging are described which utilize an improved fluid-filled lens for imaging an ultrasonic field passing through the breast or other object under investigation onto an area detector from which object information may be read out by light. Use of an ultrasonic lens in the reference beam of a holographic imaging system is also disclosed. A technique for holographic imaging wherein viewing optics are focused on the area detector directly instead of upon a focused image in space is also described with improved results under certain circumstances.

    • A method and apparatus for constructing and replaying an optical holographic record containing a plurality of very small holograms, each of which contains information, independent of the other holograms. In the preferred embodiment described, each frame of an ordinary photographic movie is recorded as an individual hologram. The record is a narrow and elongated film with the holograms formed in a line along its length, each hologram touching those on either side thereof. A moving image is reconstructed by drawing the record at a uniform speed through an effectively continuous wave coherent light beam. A light sensitive detector for converting an image into a time varying electronic signal is positioned to receive reconstructed sequence of images and transform it into a signal acceptable to an ordinary television set for displaying the movie thereon. Each hologram is constructed by passing a beam of a coherent light through a movie frame onto a much smaller hologram aperture and by interfering this beam at a finite angle with a reference wavefront having a radius of curvature substantially equal to the effective distance between the movie and the hologram. Methods of adding color visual information as well as sound information are also disclosed. Such a holographic record is copied onto a photopolymerizable detector with ultraviolet coherent light.

    • Holographic information-processing techniques which result in a hologram being formed on photosensitive material capable of reconstructing an image in real space many times the size of the hologram. Horizontal and vertical information components of an object scene to be holographically recorded are treated independently of each other. The horizontal informational component is reduced by an optical system and recorded across a long dimension of a rectangular hologram. In a preferred form of the invention, the horizontal informational component is dispersed prior to holographic recordation in order to reduce the bandwidth of said information. Except for the possible use of light-gathering optics, the vertical informational component of an object scene to be recorded along the narrow dimension of the hologram is not processed. Successive holograms so constructed are placed on a film and drawn across their narrow direction through a shutterless continuous wave coherent light beam to reconstruct in real space successive images that appear to a theater audience to form continuous action. The horizontal information component is displayed in full three dimensions while the vertical information is projected with limited three dimensionality to each member of the audience from the hologram through a lenticular screen.

Each piece of full color information, such as a frame of an ordinary color photographic movie, is recorded as an individual hologram. The record is a narrow, elongated flexible film with the holograms formed in a line along its length, each hologram touching those on either side thereof. One or more light sensitive detectors for converting an image into a time varying electronic signal are positioned to receive holographically reconstructed signals and transform them into a form acceptable to an ordinary color television set for displaying the color information thereon. One, two and three image detecting tube systems are disclosed. Several independent monochromatic components of a color information signal are carried on a single optical-electronic channel by modulation onto carrier frequencies either optically or electronically prior to construction of the hologram record. In a preferred embodiment described, the hologram record is constructed in a manner to reconstruct a board bandwidth luminance signal in a position spatially separated from the color component signal.
