Pneumatically operated welding electrodes of circular cross-section which deliver a short duration, high current pulse may be used. A cell incorporating two such formed electrodes has two electrode strips 11, 11a coiled round and separated from each ether by a porous separator 23. Tags 12 on electrode 11 are welded at 24 to a conducting top plate 20 and the tags on electrode 11a are welded at 25 to the base of the metal can 18.

[Also in Division H1] A sealing device for a rechargeable electric cell comprises a closure 12 having an aperture 20 therein for sealing a cell container in a gas tight manner, which aperture has a concave valve seat 19 in the upper face of closure 12 which engages the convex portion 25 of a yieldable sealing element 23a, thus closing the aperture. A retaining element 21 secured to closure 12 compresses the sealing element 23a against valve seat 19 by an amount such that the sealing element yields to permit gas escape when the gas pressure in the cell exceeds a predetermined value. As shown the sealing element 23a may be a moulded ball having an integral collar 24 around the mould line. It may also be a frusto-conical portion having a rounded tip. The sealing element may be made of neoprene, ethylene-propylene rubber, butyl rubber or polyurethane.
